The Bus Driver is responsible for providing safe, efficient, reliable, and on-time school bus transportation of students over specific routes to and from the school and all programs. The role requires ensuring safe and efficient transportation using established projected driving times and route schedules.

  • Be on time with established routes and designated bus stops.
  • Report to work on time for scheduled work days.
  • Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the assigned vehicle.
  • Drive established routes and designated bus stops.
  • Conduct emergency evacuation drills as required.
  • Instruct passengers, students, and riders regarding safety.
  • Manage and direct exuberant behavior of younger preteen and teenage riders.
  • Drive defensively under varying traffic and road conditions and in inclement weather.
  • Administer disciplinary procedures in accordance with transportation policies.
  • Be alert and exercise good judgment concerning emergencies and day-to-day operations.
  • Conduct bus evacuation drills as required.
  • Keep accurate records and reports as required.
  • Conduct oneself as a professional Transportation staff member at all times.
  • Operate all vehicle lifts as instructed.
  • Secure all equipment required for each passenger as instructed.
  • Lift, store, and disassemble/assemble a wheelchair of a maximum weight of 40 pounds.
  • Lift a student/passenger up to a maximum weight of 50 pounds.
  • Receive job skills training, annual in-service, and off-site training conducted by the State of Indiana, Department of Education, and South Bend School Corp. Transportation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the rules and regulations promulgated by local, state, and federal agencies.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to secure and maintain required licenses and certifications through the State of Indiana, the Indiana Department of Education, and the South Bend Community School Corporation.
  • Must provide a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) permit with a class 'B' minimum classification, 'P' passenger, 'S' School Bus, and air brake endorsement.
  • Ability to pass a physical examination and a drug screen.
  • Valid Indiana driver's License required with no points preferred.
  • Maintain a personal telephone for communication with Transportation personnel.
  • Ability to participate in and successfully complete a 4-week transportation training program.
  • Required to participate in and successfully complete training in First Aid, Bloodborne pathogen, behavior intervention, hazardous materials training, and other required safety training.
  • Preferred 2 years of experience with transporting students.
  • Part-time position may include benefits.
