About The Position

The primary purpose of this position is to ensure the safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned routes. The individual will safely operate and transport students and other authorized persons efficiently to and from designated locations.

Requirements

  • Must have a safe driving record.
  • Must be 20 years of age or older.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Clear and valid Texas commercial driver's license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements or ability to obtain one within six weeks of employment.
  • Ability to pass U.S. D.O.T physical exam and drug tests.
  • Ability to complete required bus driver safety training.
  • Ability to respond in emergency situations.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment.
  • Ability to manage student behavior.
  • Ability to work well with children with disabilities.
  • Ability to work as a team with the monitor.
  • Proficient map reading skills.

Responsibilities

  • Drive bus daily following assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
  • Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.
  • Anticipate problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions, and schedule changes and make necessary adjustments to ensure student safety and reduce delays.
  • Perform pre and post trip inspections according to specifications to ensure bus can be operated safely and notify shop of issues or needed repairs.
  • Keep assigned bus clean and maintain appropriate level of fuel.
  • Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical problems, and complete required corresponding reports.
  • Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations.
  • Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
  • Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management tools for student discipline problems.
  • Immediately report problems to transportation utilizing the Student Conduct/Safety Report.
  • Ensure all reports are accurate and received in a timely manner.
  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  • Operate equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Make sure that all safety equipment is used correctly.
  • Ensure emergency equipment such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and reflectors are in good condition and proper working order.
  • Follow emergency procedures including evacuation of students as needed and administering first aid, if necessary.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • Report any hazardous conditions along scheduled route.
  • Maintain all driver compliance certifications, renewing at least two months in advance.
  • Operate and monitor two-way radio equipment to communicate with the transportation office and other drivers.
  • Complete and maintain accurate, up-to-date, and timely records and reports including but not limited to those related to bus mileage, gas, and number of passengers transported.
  • Attend monthly Safety Meeting.
  • Other duties as assigned.
