The primary function of a Bus Driver Trainer is to train all new bus drivers and bus monitors. As a Bus Driver Trainer, punctuality, dependability, and the ability to be thorough are all desired qualities. This position will require maintaining a high level of confidentiality and attention to detail, ensuring that all corporation policies and procedures are followed, and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations are upheld.

  • Ability to work on a variety of tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions.
  • Interacting with staff and others in an open and friendly business-like manner.
  • Utilization of a computer for a wide variety of applications.
  • Following regulations pertaining to the safe operations of busses and school equipment.
  • Coordinate and evaluate the district's bus driving program.
  • Consulting with Indiana school pupil safety officer/coordinators regarding driver applicant testing results and bus driver accident evaluations.
  • Conduct post-accident investigations of all school bus accidents.
  • Interview and evaluate driver-aide applicants, recommending qualified applicants for employment.
  • Train successful applicants requesting driver/aide certification for the district.
  • Responsibility of complete DOT onboarding process.
  • Onboarding DOT process to annual review of yellow card, drug testing of drivers/aides, verification that physicals are current, administer bi-annual physical standards testing, keep all driver/aide records current regarding license/testing renewals, follow up on accidents, DOE reporting of accidents and any other DOE infractions regarding drivers, aides, and yellow and white fleet.
  • Maintaining required records and written reports.
  • Participate with local instructor groups to exchange information related to passenger transportation safety and training.
  • Oversee 'NO Instructions Limitations' or 'NO Equipment Limitations.'
  • Keep current Department of Education (DOE) School Bus Driver Instructor's Certificate.
  • Updating driver training manuals and material related to passenger transportation.
  • Ability to direct, compose and instruct monthly classes relevant to ongoing training for bus drivers and bus monitors.
  • Operating a GPS navigation system.
  • Must be able to drive routes as needed.
  • Be informed of all the workings of Tyler Tech, Versatrans, and GPS.
  • Participate in professional development, as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • High school education or equivalent is required. Advanced training is preferred.
  • Must hold a Class B Commercial Driver's License with a P&S Endorsement and an Indiana State School Bus Committee Standard Certificate (yellow card).
  • Special Bus Certificate which requires a current medical certificate.
  • Employee must provide a printout of a current driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Two years of driving experience as a bus driver and knowledge of radio communication is required.
  • Previous experience in training is an additional preferred qualification.
  • Experience with FMCSA Clearinghouse is preferred.
  • Knowledge of working with students with special transportation needs, including preschool aged students.
  • Efficient filing and record keeping is a needed skill to effectively hold this position.
  • Ability to maintain a positive relationship with pupils, staff, parents, and the community.
  • Previous experience in training.
  • Experience with FMCSA Clearinghouse.
