About The Position

The position involves operating school buses and related equipment for Katy ISD while ensuring safety and compliance with traffic laws and district policies. The individual will independently study to prepare for written tests with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and will be required to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) permit, complete behind-the-wheel training, and pass the DPS driving skills test. The role requires learning from experienced drivers and performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle. The position is non-exempt and may require approximately 20 duty days, which can vary based on training needs.

Requirements

  • College hours, high school diploma or GED (preferred)
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Acceptable driving record as defined by TxDPS and Katy ISD
  • Pass annual physical in accordance with state law
  • Negative result on drug and/or alcohol test administered as pre-employment, random, post-accident and/or reasonable suspicion basis, in accordance with federal law and district policy
  • Able to obtain all Bus Driver qualifications within three months of hire date
  • Able to communicate in English in both written and oral
  • Able to read and interpret maps and routes
  • Able to climb in and out of all school bus emergency exits
  • Able to work productively without continual supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Operate any Katy ISD bus and related equipment in a safe and efficient manner while obeying all traffic laws and following Transportation Department guidelines and district policies.
  • Learn and perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle and report any mechanical problems or damage.
  • Report involvement in any accident, incident, or job-related injury in a timely manner.
  • Obtain CDL permit.
  • Complete behind-the-wheel training program.
  • Pass DPS driving skills test and obtain CDL.
  • Observe drivers on actual routes.
  • Establish and maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Read and follow established procedures and guidelines.
  • Adhere to route assignment changes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
