About The Position

Substitute for bus driver and ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned route or trip. Operate school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools and other designated locations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED, preferred
  • Valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License with all school bus driving endorsements
  • Bus Driver Certification
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Ability to pass alcohol and drug test
  • Ability to complete required bus driver safety training
  • Ability to operate bus
  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Knowledge of student discipline procedures and ability to manage student behavior
  • Experienced driver with clear driving record

Responsibilities

  • Vehicle Operation
  • Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
  • Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities as assigned.
  • Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs.
  • Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures and complete required reports.
  • Keep records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.
  • Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.
  • Work irregular hours as needed.
  • Student Management:
  • Supervise students while boarding and exiting the bus and crossing the street, and ensure all students have exited the bus at the end of the route or trip.
  • Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior.
  • Maintain discipline and report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
  • Safety
  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  • Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
  • Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as: first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflector.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and immediately inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable.
  • Report any hazardous conditions along the route.
  • Communication
  • Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
  • Foster good school/community relations and good relations among all school employees.
  • Professional Growth and Development
  • Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.
  • Participate in professional learning, staff meetings, and special events as assigned.
