About The Position

Position: Bus Driver or Substitute Bus Driver Location: Transportation Department Report To: Transportation Director Compensation: Per Bargaining Unit Agreement Benefits: Per Bargaining Unit Agreement Starting pay is $21.55 per hour (Step 1) with no prior experience. Drivers with previous public school transportation experience may start at a higher pay rate. Regular Route Drivers Board hired following 60-day probation Single subscriber medical insurance is provided following Board hire (4 runs/26 hours per week) Cash in Lieu of benefits is also paid. 10 Sick Days, 12 Vacation Days, 8 Holidays, and 1.5 Personal days are provided per year, following Board hire. Split shift position; drivers must be available between 6:00-9:00 AM and 2:00-5:00 PM Caledonia provides paid CDL Training! ($15.25 per hour) Sub Bus Drivers: Substitute Drivers are paid $21.55 per hour Paid CDL Training is provided ($15.25) per hour during training FLEXIBILITY! May work mornings (6:00 AM - 9:00 AM), afternoons (2:00 PM - 5:00 PM), or both Position Summary Drives a school bus to transport students to and from school over defined routes and within structured schedules while adhering to traffic ordinances and safety policies; ensures that students adhere to school bus rules and communicates with students to monitor behavior.

Requirements

  • EDUCATION : This position requires a high school diploma or general education degree (G.E.D.).
  • EXPERIENCE : Previous experience as a bus driver is desired, however, the district is willing to train individuals with all levels of knowledge, experience or aptitude.
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No supervisory responsibilities
  • CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, OR REGISTRATIONS: Possession of a valid State of Michigan Commercial Drivers License with the appropriate B-P-S endorsements and without driving ‘points’. Must meet School Bus Driver requirements as outlined by the Department of Education and State of Michigan including the minimum hours of instruction and satisfactorily passing the knowledge examination. Must meet local, county, and state standards for driving skills test and driving record check. CPR. First-Aid certified.
  • Ability to read and comprehend safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence and routine reports.
  • Ability to complete the State of Michigan required driving license tests.
  • Ability to complete physical demands tests and drug tests.
  • Ability to maintain a driving record that does not include ‘points’.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and school administrators and staff.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Responsibilities

  • Drive a school bus to transport students to and from school over defined routes while adhering to structured schedules, safety policies, and traffic ordinances
  • Complete assigned bus routes in a safe and timely manner within the assigned schedule
  • Report schedule delays or accidents and request re-routes as necessary
  • Perform thorough pre-trip, mid-trip, and post-trip inspections of the bus daily and prior to each scheduled bus run to ensure compliance with Michigan Department of Transportation regulations. In addition, report any defects to the Director of Transportation
  • Conduct loading/unloading of students per state and local regulations
  • Monitors conduct of students on the bus to maintain discipline and safety. Issue discipline notifications and follow district discipline procedures
  • Establish favorable working relationships with other drivers, maintenance personnel, bus assistants, teachers, passengers, principals, school and program
  • Completes and submits work orders, pre-trip forms, incident reports, and accident reports
  • Operates the two-way radio to maintain communication with the bus garage
  • Operates vehicle lifts as prescribed by district policies
  • Be familiar with and follow all district and departmental policies, rules, and regulations
  • Safely operates all types of buses owned by the district
  • Treat students and parents with dignity and respect
  • Performs other related duties as directed by the Director of Transportation
