About The Position

Primary Purpose: Assist the school bus drivers with assuring the safety and wellbeing of the students while on their trips to and from school and extra-curricular activities. Qualifications: Education/Certification High School Diploma or G.E.D. Must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting check prior to starting employment. Official citizenship documentation Experience: Not required; will be trained by school district personnel Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Ability to follow verbal instructions and communicate effectively. Ability to read, understand and communicate in English Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment. Ability to work well with students and those with disabilities Ability to become familiar with all routes to and from school to help the bus driver Ability to complete required bus driver safety training Ability to manage student behavior Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of individuals Proper and acceptable legal techniques of passenger [physical] restraint, when necessary, as a final resort. Must be 18 years of age Supervisory Responsibilities: Monitors on any school bus are charged with the responsibility of the students’ safety and well-being while students are in route and otherwise in the custody of transportation services. Equipment Used : School bus wheelchair lift Two-way radio for communication with dispatchers and other buses Various emergency equipment included in each school bus Electronic time clock Mental/Physical/Environmental Demands: Tools/Equipment Used: Safely operate bus, including steering, operating pedals, opening/closing doors, within confined space of driver’s seat. Evacuate bus through confined space of emergency exits. Posture: Occasional bending, stooping, or kneeling Motion: Continual sitting, walking, climbing, or reaching and repetitive hand and arm motions Lifting: Lifts/carries 10-50 pounds frequently, 50-60 pounds occasionally, more than 60 pounds infrequently with assistance. Pushing/Pulling 10-70 pounds sporadically. Environment: Work outside and inside, around vehicles and exposure to extreme temperatures. Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress. Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential to the job.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise students as they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
  • Assist the bus driver in watching the students as they get inside campus or residence.
  • Assist driver in inspecting and maintaining the school bus.
  • Keep students safe and orderly while on the school bus and monitor student behavior.
  • Report student discipline/behavior issues to campus administration and transportation.
  • Learn and adapt to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Communicates with office staff and/or parents on issues which, for the student's benefit, require immediate attention.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information.
  • Attend district training as scheduled and required.
  • Document all student injuries and complete all required reports.
  • Keep assigned bus clean and check for wheel-chair lift mechanical defects before/after each operation, and report needed repairs to shop.
  • Lift and carry students with disabilities on and off the bus according to their individual needs.
  • Supervise use of seat belts, vests, or car seats by students in buses equipped with such devices.
  • Follow emergency procedures and administer first aid/CPR if necessary.
  • Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment such as first aid and body fluid kits, fire extinguisher, reflectors, seatbelts, car seats, etc.
  • Operate Communication equipment to communicate with transportation office.
  • Demonstrate good attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by Supervisory or Administrative Staff.
