About The Position

The Bus Aide assists in the safe and pleasant transportation of children enrolled in the School District. The School Bus Aides are directly responsible to the Transportation Manager. Works cooperatively with administration, staff, parents and students to perform job responsibilities. 10 month position

Requirements

  • To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Excellent communication skills required.
  • Clearance as provider under such programs by both the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the federal government is therefore an essential qualification for this position.
  • Qualified candidate will be required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and to talk and hear
  • Sit and occasionally be required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel and crouch.
  • Have specific vision abilities, to include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Have the ability to lift and/or move up to 55 pounds.
  • Possess effective communication, judgmental, planning and human relations skills, and will be required to work under periods of stress due to the level of the position responsibility.
  • Risk involved with travel on main highways, side streets and roads during transportation of children.
  • Must be able to climb into the school bus, walk, bend, kneel and squat frequently.
  • Possess effective interpersonal skills with the ability to interface diplomatically with parents, students, and other support staff.
  • Handle confidential information.
  • Maintain stamina during the workday.
  • Have specific vision abilities; to include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Concentrate on tasks.
  • Act 34 – Criminal History Clearance
  • Act 152 – Child Abuse History Clearance
  • FBI – Fingerprint check
  • Approved physical to be free from Tuberculosis

Responsibilities

  • Ensures the safety and well-being of children being transported to and from the program and on field trips on vehicles used by the program, including but not limited to: Helping children board the bus safely, including helping teachers prepare for departure (putting on coats and assuring that each child has his/her own belongings); Assuring that the bus driver is not distracted from the safe operation of the vehicle; Helping children safely get off the bus and into the custody (only) of those individuals authorized to receive them; and Retrieving any fallen objects during the bus ride
  • Follow and ensures mandated child restraint devise procedures (if needed), ensuring children are properly positioned and restrained.
  • Assure that no child is ever left unsupervised on a bus.
  • Engage in activity that is; Safe and appropriate for a moving vehicle; and Consistent with developmentally appropriate practices to make the trip pleasant and comfortable.
  • In the event of an accident or emergency, assures the safe evacuation of children and adults passengers (following the Bus Evacuation Plan) and assists in assuring that all passengers are transported to the nearest hospital or to their private physician, as per Medical/Accident Emergency Plan.
  • Attend all scheduled staff meetings, team meetings, and trainings, as requested.
  • Assist in maintaining the interior of the vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition
  • Assure that no child is ever left unsupervised on a bus.
  • Perform other duties, as may be assigned.
