About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Facilities Management Branch Chief, the Buildings and Grounds Superintendent for Area 4 supervises 9 skilled and semi-skilled employees involved in services, maintenance, repair, grounds upkeep, and minor remodeling. There are 48 buildings at 14 locations totaling over 432,000 square feet plus various other assets that must be maintained. The majority of buildings are located across northwestern Wisconsin. Counties in this area include: Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, Iron, Burnett, Washburn, Sawyer, Price, Polk, Barron, Rusk, Taylor, St. Croix, Dunn, Chippewa, and Clark counties. The position prepares correspondence and must complete various administrative functions in support of buildings and ground administration. With emphasis on customer service, the Buildings and Grounds Superintendent serves as the Area 4 Regional Superintendent and oversees the execution of contracts with private firms for janitorial services, landscape maintenance, maintenance & repair, remodeling, and construction projects. The position is responsible for building key control, security, HVAC system management, and preventive maintenance systems. The position manages authorized funding and identifies cost saving initiatives. The Buildings and Grounds Superintendent provides support as directed for building and equipment maintenance and repair for other National Guard facilities located throughout Maintenance Area 4.

Requirements

  • Must possess or be eligible to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license and meet the requirements of the State of Wisconsin Fleet Vehicle Policy to drive a state vehicle.
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Minimum of two year's driving experience
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Additionally, the driving record must not reflect the following conditions:
  • Three or more moving violations (with point reductions) and/or at fault accidents in the past 2 years
  • An OWI or DUI violation within the past 12 months
  • A suspension or revocation of the driver's license
  • In order to gain access to the military facilities and to determine whether the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job being filled, DMA will conduct a comprehensive background check.
  • In addition, the position requires a Common Access Card (CAC). A CAC requires successful completion of a Department of Defense investigation which is an additional more in-depth federal background check, for gaining access to federal computer systems, restricted locations, or classified information.
  • This position requires some overnight travel.
  • The Department of Military Affairs does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility Form I-9.
  • This is a State of Wisconsin Civil Service position. The DMA does not require current or previous military experience.
  • All new permanent, project, and limited term employees will be required to report to Joint Force Headquarters (JFHQ) in Madison on the Monday of their first week of employment for the New Employee Orientation (NEO) program. Additional information will be sent to the new employees and their supervisors on the Tuesday prior to NEO.
  • Supervision of employees (performance evaluations, hiring, training, counseling/ coaching, discipline, etc.)
  • Planning, coordinating, administering, and overseeing preventative maintenance, repair, and minor remodeling.
  • Independently managing a program budget.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced training/ experience in operation, maintenance, repair and installation of complicated building mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.
  • Training and/or experience in health and safety codes applicable to office buildings and maintenance shop buildings.
  • Facilities Operations and Maintenance procedures outlined in Wisconsin Army National Guard (WIARNG) Pamphlet (PAM) Regulation 420-10.
