About The Position

The Building Substitute is a flexible, student-centered educator who provides consistent instructional and behavioral support across Deep Roots Charter School. This role ensures continuity of learning by covering classrooms during teacher absences, supporting students with routines and expectations, and upholding the school's instructional and cultural values. The Building Substitute plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, joyful, and academically focused learning environment and contributes to a strong sense of belonging for students. Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience working with children or adolescents in a school or youth-serving setting.
  • Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to adapt quickly, problem-solve, and remain calm in dynamic environments.
  • Clear and professional communication skills.
  • Commitment to Deep Roots' mission, core values, and anti-racist educational practices.
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Pennsylvania Teaching Certification or willingness to obtain one required

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an urban or charter school setting strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instructional coverage across grade levels and content areas during teacher absences, following lesson plans and instructional materials as provided.
  • Maintain classroom routines, expectations, and procedures to ensure a consistent and productive learning environment.
  • Support students in completing assigned work and engaging meaningfully in learning activities.
  • Adapt instruction and support as needed to meet diverse student learning needs.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom culture that promotes student engagement and belonging.
  • Uphold school-wide behavioral expectations and restorative practices.
  • Build positive relationships with students while maintaining clear boundaries and professionalism.
  • Support student supervision during transitions, lunch, recess, and other non-instructional times as assigned.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers, instructional staff, and school leadership regarding student progress, concerns, and classroom needs.
  • Collaborate with support staff to ensure continuity of services for students with IEPs, 504 plans, and other learning supports.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and readiness to support various classrooms, roles, or duties as needed throughout the school day.
  • Maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment in alignment with school policies and procedures.
  • Follow all school protocols related to attendance, supervision, emergency procedures, and student confidentiality.
  • Support school operations by assisting with coverage needs beyond classroom instruction when necessary.
