About The Position

The Building Service Worker position at Joliet Junior College is a part-time, entry-level role under direct supervision, responsible for performing a variety of custodial duties to maintain a clean, orderly, and safe environment. The position requires knowledge of safe equipment operation and adherence to safety standards as outlined by JJC and OSHA. Although previous custodial experience is preferred, all new employees will receive training on their duties and expectations. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform essential job duties with limited supervision and contribute positively to the department's climate.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Willingness to learn procedures.
  • Must pass a physical examination.
  • Ability to follow specific verbal and/or written instructions.
  • Courteous, dependable, and ability to work well with a diverse population.
  • Ability to lift, carry, stack, and maneuver objects regularly, with a maximum weight of 50 lbs.
  • Willingness and ability to go up in an open lift for window cleaning to heights of approximately 25 feet.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Driver’s license within six months of hire.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others, displaying cultural competence and emotional intelligence.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the college’s core values.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and sanitize areas in accordance with required cleaning methods, including classrooms, offices, and washrooms.
  • Assist in moving and setting up equipment and furniture for events and other general campus needs.
  • Shovel sidewalks and clear snow around the exterior of campus buildings.
  • Take classes as offered for custodial duties or as required for college employees.
  • Observe safety standards and practices as outlined by JJC and OSHA.
  • Report all damage noticed in assigned areas to the Lead Custodian.
  • Safely operate and maintain custodial equipment.
  • Participate in achieving departmental and college goals and objectives.
  • Complete special project work under direct supervision, including carpet/fabric care, VCT care, LVT care, and window care.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
