About The Position

The Building Safety Manager/Building Official is a technical and administrative role responsible for overseeing the operations of the Builder's Services Division. This position involves ensuring compliance with building codes, managing personnel, and providing guidance to construction professionals and the public. The role requires a combination of technical knowledge, leadership skills, and the ability to handle complex situations related to building safety and regulations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ten years of experience in architecture, engineering, building inspection, or building contracting, including three years with a governmental agency responsible for construction codes enforcement.
  • Possession of a valid Florida driver license and acceptable driving record.
  • At least three standard certifications in relevant disciplines (Building Inspector, Plans Examiner, or Building Code Administrator).

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of building permitting software.
  • Familiarity with FEMA flood insurance rate maps.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of project management principles.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties of Building Official as required by County and State Building Codes.
  • Direct the overall operations, policies, and personnel of the Builder's Services Division.
  • Train officers and support staff, and answer field questions to ensure proper service is provided.
  • Conduct technical inspections of all phases of construction to ensure compliance with building codes.
  • Develop and administer the Division's annual budget.
  • Administer inter-local agreements regarding building permitting and inspection services.
  • Review construction documents for compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Monitor correspondence related to other divisions in Community Development & Fire Services.
  • Assist and advise contractors and the general public on building codes and standards.
  • Investigate complaints regarding building construction codes and issue Stop Work orders as necessary.
  • Coordinate with local and State Licensing Boards to resolve issues and enforce conditions.
  • Present Builder's Services issues before the County Code Enforcement Board and other boards as necessary.
  • Work with staff on annual reporting and strategic planning.
