About The Position

The Building Official is responsible for managing and directing the Building Division's inspection and permitting programs within Jefferson County. This role serves as the technical expert in building codes and standards, ensuring compliance through inspections and consultations with various stakeholders. The position requires a strong background in construction, building codes, and personnel management, along with the ability to enforce regulations effectively and tactfully.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Eight (8) years of experience in construction trades, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory position.
  • Five (5) years of experience performing inspections, with two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory position, or any equivalent combination of experience, training, or education that provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

  • Considerable knowledge of Building Codes and ethics.
  • Considerable knowledge of current building construction methods, materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Some knowledge of principles and processes of environmental laws, State housing laws, regulations for building within a floodplain, and local zoning ordinances.
  • Some knowledge of personnel management and training.
  • Knowledge of computer applications including the latest versions of Microsoft Office Word, Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and direct Building Inspectors and Permit Technician/Administrative Assistant as a supervisor under the designation of the Administrator.
  • Manage the Building Division's plan review, inspection, and permitting programs under limited supervision.
  • Serve as the technical expert in the application of building accessibility, fire, life safety, and related codes and standards.
  • Resolve interpretation issues for inspections of buildings under construction and existing buildings for compliance with adopted codes.
  • Update knowledge of codes as adopted and recommend modifications to adopted codes when necessary.
  • Prepare and maintain records of plans, inspections, letters, and reports in connection with building permits, inspections, and violations.
  • Inspect structural components of residential and commercial buildings under construction, remodeling projects, signs, fences, and demolition projects to ensure compliance with applicable codes.
  • Consult with and advise architects, engineers, designers, attorneys, contractors, local and state officials, and the general public regarding interpretation, application, and enforcement of various adopted codes, laws, and regulations.
  • Work with the Fire Marshall in coordinating plan reviews and inspections to reduce duplication of efforts.
  • Attend meetings and workshops.
  • Analyze and forecast staffing needs; establish and execute annual goals and long-term strategic plans for the division; establish clear and consistent performance expectations for each staff position.
