About The Position

A Building Mechanic is responsible for, but not limited to, a comprehensive list of job duties. However, it is not considered a complete list due to additions of new technology, changing methods, and new procedures. A Building Mechanic is expected to assist in complex renovation processes. RESPONSIBILITY: A. Supervisory Expectations Daily contact in some form: in person, telephone, or radio. Contact must be courteous and professional using radio etiquette if communication is in form of radio communication. Must observe departmental reporting structure, taking into account confidentiality. Must read, understand, and practice workplace safety. B. Complexity Work with the established procedures involving the work order system, ordering of parts, materials, and maintaining references such as equipment manuals, drawing and parts ordering files. Follow policies and procedures provided by University Housing Services. Employee will acknowledge understanding of all policies by signing off on all documents. The Building Mechanic must comply with University guidelines, attendance expectations, and procedures. C. Productivity/Volume/ Quality of Work Receives numerous work orders daily. Must meet schedules, complete assignments and work orders in a timely service-oriented manner. Work produced must meet quality requirements of accuracy, thoroughness, and effectiveness. Must be efficient in use of time and resources. D. Training The department will offer both developmental and technical training on an ongoing and annual basis. It will be necessary for some of the training to be mandatory. It is, however, the department expectation that all training is attended.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years (36 months) of mechanical and/or electrical work experience. (This experience refers to building mechanical maintenance such as light carpentry and plumbing. It does not include machinery or farm implement maintenance.)
  • Valid driver's license.
  • A final candidate must complete a post-offer pre-employment physical exam. Employment is contingent on the successful result of the pre-employment physical.
  • Must have the manual dexterity and motor skills needed to perform mechanical repairs and work on a variety of machinery, appliances, hardware and structures.
  • Heavy physical exertion and activity will be required at times. Examples are lifting large bulky items weighing up to 80 pounds while going up or down stairs or ramps, unloading furnishings such as mattresses, desks, beds, or appliances from trucks; ability to push/pull up to 60 lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic knowledge of mechanical/electrical equipment and devices.
  • Working knowledge of construction principles, materials and methods as well as the ability to learn and apply crafts' techniques, processes, and principles.
  • Ability to use independent judgment in planning sequence of operations.
  • Ability to organize, determine priorities and take initiative.
  • Ability to communicate with UHS/EMDH administrators, staff, and other Building Mechanics.
  • Ability to process work orders and submit closed when work is completed in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to work well with other ISU crafts and trades personnel and outside contractors.
  • Responsive to the needs of "customers" of the unit and follow through on customer interactions in a timely, service-oriented manner.
