About The Position

Primarily responsible for heating, ventilation and air conditioning for the maintenance and repair of facilities. Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to: a. temperature controls; b. air handling systems; c. commercial refrigeration systems; d. commercial heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems; e. heat pumps such as: air to air, air to water, hydronic and split systems; f. calibration of pneumatic and digital controls; g. program various digitally controlled systems; and h. operate, configure and maintain PCs related to DDC systems. This position is subject to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Mandated Drug and Alcohol Testing Program as provided in District Policy #5202.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a trade school course with a minimum of two (2) equivalent years duration related to one or more of the assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years recent successful experience in private enterprise or government agency as a certified heating and refrigeration mechanic.
  • Knowledge of all piping and tubing related to commercial refrigeration.
  • Ability to identify, evaluate and repair commercial and residential HVAC systems.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work on rooftops of various heights and inclinations.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds to chest height from floor level and perform all normal pulling, pushing and lifting activities.
  • Ability to perform tests using test equipment related to commercial refrigeration, heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, and size equipment for application.
  • Ability to communicate, coordinate and maintain good working relationships with Maintenance and Operations personnel, building staff and public entities.
  • Ability to self-evaluate and initiate a self-development program to maintain adequate technical knowledge.
  • Ability to read and review blueprints, and prepare schematics and diagrams.
  • Basic computational skills and ability to compute heat loss and heat gain of buildings.
  • Ability to maintain a preventive maintenance schedule for commercial refrigeration systems and building environmental heating and ventilating systems.
  • Ability to assist and recommend sizing of heating, ventilating and air conditioning units.
  • Ability to communicate with vendors in terminology of the refrigeration trade.
  • Ability to calibrate, balance and install thermostats.
  • Ability to trouble shoot and balance air handling equipment.
  • Ability to solder tubing and weld.
  • Washington State Driver’s License with a safe driving record demonstrated by a current 5 year drivers extract.
  • Fingerprinting, background check and pre-employment drug test.
  • Will be required to provide some personal hand tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Five (5) to seven (7) years recent successful experience in one or more of the assigned areas of responsibility in private enterprise or government agency.
  • Two years experience in trouble-shooting mechanical/electrical controls.
  • Knowledge of Energy Management
  • Experience in other crafts.

Responsibilities

  • Perform work to build, install, modify and repair facilities in a safe manner.
  • Assure that work performed meets applicable local, state and federal codes.
  • Prepare requisitions and specifications for supplies and materials.
  • Assist in the preparation of contract specifications.
  • Assist in technical inspections to assure compliance with specifications.
  • Assure satisfactory completion of all assigned work orders in conformance with all applicable codes.
  • Interpret drawings, sketches and specifications.
  • Maintain inventory control of assigned shop and truck stock.
  • Safe and courteous operation of District assigned vehicle.
  • Maintain assigned tools and equipment.
  • Work cooperatively with outside contractors and assist in verifying completion of contracted work to specifications.
  • Assist in identifying and evaluating needs for maintenance work and inclusion into a planned maintenance program.
  • Provide input when requested concerning the most appropriate manner of repair, replacement, modification or new installment work considering cost, timelines and equipment and all applicable county, state and federal codes.
  • Work cooperatively with supervisor when requested in providing realistic labor and material cost estimates.
  • Provide requested input on causes of failures discovered during preventive maintenance inspections and offer suggestions for correction when requested.
  • Assist in the analysis of preventive maintenance inspection findings and causes of failures.
  • Assist in determining and recommending modifications to work practices or preventive maintenance frequencies.
  • Provide assistance to the supervisor when requested in the preparation of reports and documentation of modifications to as-built drawings and facility records.
  • Adhere to district and departmental policies, procedures and safety practices.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and expertise.
  • Determine and request training to maintain skills relevant to the changing technology.
  • Respond, when assigned, to emergencies that endanger life and/or district property.
  • As directed, assist other crafts in the performance of their duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
