About The Position

The overall responsibilities of the Building Maintenance Craftsperson are to perform the proper inspections, maintenance, service, repair and operations of all buildings and structures occupied by the Salem School System. Performs miscellaneous maintenance and repair tasks on municipal buildings and property requiring journeyman skills in at least two of the following areas; carpentry, electrical, HVAC, painting, plumbing or other trades. Performs duties such as repairing and maintaining roofs, doors, locks, furniture, cabinets, shelves, stairs, sinks and other building components. Performs minor electrical work not requiring a licensed electrician such as repairing and troubleshooting lights, fuses and mechanical equipment. Performs minor plumbing work not requiring a licensed plumber, such as repairing or maintaining toilets, sinks and mechanical equipment. Perform light mechanical work not requiring a licensed HAVC technician such as trouble shooting heating and cooling complaints, HVAC control issues and basic HVAC maintenance. May spend a portion of their time working on the custodial or grounds crew including landscaping, snow removal and other maintenance duties. Performs other duties as assigned by the Building Service Director and may in the event of emergency or short-handed situations be required to perform duties to assist in maintaining as standard of health, safety, security, cleanliness and co-operation between departments that are required in a school environment.

Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Two years supplemental training in trade or vocational courses, or two or more years’ experience in general maintenance or building construction.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to adapt to campus software.
  • Ability to read, write, analyze and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematics and calculate figures including percentages.
  • Working knowledge of computers.
  • Working knowledge of computerized automatic control system by Johnson Controls, Inc., Automatic Logic, Siemens Building Systems, Invensys and ENE, Inc.
  • Ability to define problems, establishes facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with co-workers and other staff personnel including temporary replacement or seasonable employees and the school community.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements, School Committee Policies, and State and Federal Laws.
  • Must display good judgment, common sense and a keen understanding of the importance of maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Pre-employment physical shall be required prior to employment.
