About The Position

This is a provisional appointment. Under the general supervision of the Commissioner of Inspectional Services and under the immediate direction of the Chief Building Inspector/or the Supervisor of Inspections, performs inspections for buildings and structures, or anything attached to or connected to therewith as to structural soundness for conformance with all applicable codes and ordinances.

Requirements

  • At least five (5) years of experience in the supervision of building construction or design, or a two (2) year associate's degree in building construction and design.
  • A bachelor's degree or master's degree in Civil Engineering is preferred.
  • Must be a Certified Building Official or attain certification by the State within 12 months of the hiring date.
  • Experience with all types (high-rise, commercial, and residential) and methods (masonry, steel, concrete, and wood) of construction is required.
  • Sufficient familiarity with the principles of building construction to determine whether a building is unsafe and dangerous.
  • Thorough knowledge of the State Building code, its amendments, the Boston Zoning Code, and NFPA code chapters 13, 72, and 101.
  • Ability to write comprehensive and accurate reports of examinations made of buildings and structures.
  • Thorough knowledge of sheet metal regulations.
  • Ability to read plans and specifications for conformance with the above codes.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required.
  • Must have and maintain a current Massachusetts driver's license.
  • C.O.R.I. check required.
  • Boston Residency Required.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Hansen software system and various computer programs.
  • Multi-lingual candidate preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections for buildings and structures for structural soundness.
  • Examine structures within jurisdiction for compliance with the Massachusetts State Building Code and its amendments, NEPA chapters 13, 72, and 101, and the Boston Zoning Code.
  • Require reports of any condition deemed as potentially unsafe and/or illegal occupancies and report to superiors.
  • Examine premises for compliance with the Zoning Act.
  • Examine buildings damaged by fire to determine the extent of damage.
  • Submit comprehensive reports of inspections.
  • Check and report on work progress of building construction, alteration or repair, and shoring or demolition of buildings and structures.
  • Investigate complaints for violations of codes and prosecute through the legal system when necessary.
  • Record daily work assignments and retain records relative to duties.
  • Perform related work as required.
