About The Position

The Building Inspector is a skilled technical position that conducts inspections on commercial and residential construction projects; compares construction to the construction plans to ensure construction projects are compliant with all of the provisions of the building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical and related codes, the specific standards of materials, workmanship and safety, and the code within the City ordinances. This position is expected to maintain the highest level of customer service while engaging with contractors, homeowners, the general public and other city departments. This position reports directly to the Building Official.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and three years related experience; or equivalent education and experience.
  • ICC Certification as Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical or Combination Inspector or two years special training in municipal inspections is preferred.
  • Must have a Plumbing Inspector license issued by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners or must be able to obtain within one year.
  • Possession of a valid Texas "Class C" driver license or higher.
  • Knowledge of building codes, ordinances and regulations related to building, electrical, plumbing and/or safety.
  • Ability to field inspect job sites, walk construction sites, and climb ladders to inspect high places.
  • Skill in operating a vehicle.
  • Ability to review site and construction plans and specifications and apply code requirements.
  • Ability to work closely with Code Enforcement Officers and Code Enforcement Management.
  • Ability to learn non-structural code enforcement.
  • Must pass background check and pre-employment substance abuse screening as a condition of employment.
  • A motor vehicle record check and job-related doctor's physical exam may also be required.
  • Safety-sensitive positions remain subject to random drug and alcohol testing after hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's degree preferred.
  • Master Electrician license and/or a Master Plumber license preferred.
