About The Position

Conducts building inspections to ensure compliance with municipal building codes and related regulations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • One to three years of experience in building construction at the skilled or foreman level.
  • Skill in operating applicable tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of major types of building construction materials and methods, and stages of construction.
  • Knowledge of municipal building codes and related ordinances.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and interface with the general public.
  • Ability to detect violations including poor workmanship, inferior materials, and hazard of fire and collapse.
  • Ability to follow through with appropriate action to correct the situation.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints.
  • Must be able to sit for prolonged periods; must be able to listen to normal conversation; must be able to walk occasionally, and use hands and fingers to operate, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; must be able to reach with hands and arms; must be able to have vision sufficient to see close up and have the ability to adjust focus; and, must be able to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds and transport it 15 feet.
  • Certified by a major model code association, or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
  • Valid state driver's license, or ability to obtain by employment date, required.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree in a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects buildings under construction or during remodeling to determine compliance with building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical code requirements and to ensure the application of safe construction practices.
  • Inspects buildings being moved within, into, or out of the city for compliance with regulations of the building code.
  • Receives phone calls from contractors concerning work in progress. Answers questions related to building code.
  • Studies new materials, methods, and appliances of building construction to keep current on modern development.
  • Maintains records regarding inspections.
  • Reviews plans of proposed buildings for code compliance.
  • Investigates public complaints.
  • Determines compliance with accessibility.
  • The above duties and responsibilities include those tasks, physical and mental requirements, visual requirements, unique physical surroundings, and mental/cognitive abilities required to perform the essential elements of the position.
