Building Inspector II
About The Position
As the Building Inspector, you will shape the safety, quality, and integrity of the communities we build. You play a vital part in ensuring residential and commercial construction projects meet adopted building, erosion control, and zoning codes—protecting both people and property at every stage of development. As a valued member of our municipal team, you’ll oversee projects ranging from single-family homes to complex commercial developments. Reporting to a Team Leader or Project Manager, you’ll work closely with Architects, Engineers, and contractors, conducting thorough inspections and providing trusted guidance to keep projects compliant and on track. In this role, your attention to detail, sound judgment, and collaborative spirit make a visible difference. You don’t just inspect structures—you help build safer communities, foster responsible growth, and demonstrate the meaningful impact of our work for the clients and neighborhoods we proudly serve.
Requirements
- High school diploma or G.E.D., 2-yr Construction trade degree preferred
- You have at least three (3) years of construction/trade experience, including two (2) years of code enforcement/inspection experience – or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- NPDES Level 1-B Erosion Official certification
- International Code Council (ICC) Residential Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing certifications
- Customer service-oriented, with sharp organizational skills
- Proficient in basic computer software applications
- Interpersonal skills, communicating effectively both verbally and via written correspondence
- Able to balance resources, tasks, and deadlines, to provide solutions in a fast-paced environment that often requires immediate turnaround
Responsibilities
- Perform field inspection of residential and commercial structures (subject to certifications)
- Complete reports, forms and citations and subsequently record all information in the department databases
- Assist developers, contactors and customers with questions, complaints and concerns regarding compliance and corrective actions
- Respond to inquiries from contractors and citizens
- Perform all other duties assigned by team leader
