About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Planning and Development Services, the Inspector – Mechanical - Plumbing I/II performs a variety of skilled field and office work involved in the enforcement of codes and regulations regarding mechanical and plumbing installations. This includes inspecting new construction, remodeling, and repairs to determine compliance with City mechanical, plumbing, and fuel gas codes, as well as reviewing plans and specifications for compliance with City codes.

Requirements

  • Five years of experience in mechanical and/or plumbing installation work as a Journeyman and/or Master Plumber.
  • High school diploma or GED certification.
  • Current valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 90 days.
  • Ability to obtain a Plumbing Inspector License within 18 months.
  • Ability to obtain a Mechanical Inspector Certification within 24 months.
  • One year of experience in work comparable to Inspector – Mechanical - Plumbing I for Inspector II.
  • Continued training through ICC and Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners.
  • Residential Plumbing Inspector or Residential Mechanical Inspector certification from ICC for Inspector II.
  • Two years of experience in work comparable to Inspector – Mechanical - Plumbing II for Inspector III.
  • Plumbing Plans Examiner or Mechanical Plans Examiner certification from ICC for Inspector III.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect residential, commercial, and industrial mechanical and plumbing installations for compliance with City codes.
  • Check plans and specifications for compliance with current adopted City codes.
  • Enforce adopted City mechanical, plumbing, and fuel gas codes; identify areas of non-compliance.
  • Issue Stop Work Orders.
  • Inspect work sites to ensure that contractors and workers have appropriate licenses.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports and review permit applications.
  • Enter daily inspection data into building inspections software.
  • Operate a City vehicle to travel to various job sites.
  • Serve as advisor to Mechanical, Plumbing, Fuel Gas Sub-Committee.
  • Assist in evaluating buildings for rehabilitation or demolition.
  • Inspect backflow devices and review test reports.
  • Hold classes for stakeholders to educate on new codes.
  • Investigate fire damaged structures and assist with repair requirements.
