The Building Engineer will manage one of our school campuses. The person in this role will be responsible for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, masonry, electrical work, and other general maintenance functions. This position reports to KIPP Chicago’s Managing Director of Operations, as well as the school’s site-based Operations Leader.

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices utilized in the operation and maintenance of heating, ventilation, electrical and air conditioning systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of Chicago Public Schools’ facilities rules and regulations.
  • Considerable knowledge of general maintenance methods and techniques.
  • Create and follow a preventative maintenance schedule.
  • Conduct regular walkthroughs – both individually and with the building’s Operations Leader, Director of Facilities, and/or Managing Director of Operations.
  • Ensure timely repairs are made in order to prevent premature failure of the aforementioned systems.
  • Ensure mechanical equipment and building functions are in compliance with City, State, and Federal codes (e.g., pest control, asbestos abatement).
  • Ensure necessary supplies for building maintenance are ordered, inventoried, and properly stored.
  • Work collaboratively with custodians, food service staff, and office team.
  • Communicate effectively with custodians, food service staff, and the educational staff (teachers, administrators, office team).
  • Develop positive relationships with vendors and hold them accountable to high expectations for both work quality and timeliness.
  • Work closely with the Custodial Team Leader on various aspects of building cleanliness & maintenance.
  • Be on call as issues may arise during nights or weekends.
  • Work closely with and support other KIPP Building Engineers with issues that may arise at other KIPP campuses.
  • Regular and reliable on-site attendance is essential to performing the responsibilities of this role.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • City of Chicago Stationary Engineers License.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a building engineer (or assistant engineer), with experience as a Chicago Public Schools building engineer (or assistant engineer) preferred.
  • EPA Universal Technician Certification (Refrigeration).
  • Department of Homeland Security FEMA Introduction to the Incident Command.
  • 10-Hour OSHA Training Certificate.
  • System for Schools Certificate.
  • Chicago Public Schools Asbestos Awareness Certificate.
  • Demonstrable computer skills in the use of various software & systems, including the EAM system.
  • A belief in the mission and values of KIPP.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-awareness, responsiveness to feedback, and willingness to learn.
  • A Cleared CPS Background Check before offer of employment.
