About Our Job The Denver Sheriff Department is the largest Sheriff Department agency in the state of Colorado and is comprised of many divisions and diverse operations with over 1000 uniformed and non-uniformed staff members. These operations include two separate jails, security for the District and County court systems, state inmate transportation, extradition duties, fugitive and K-9 units and security at DenverHealth Medical Center. We are now accepting applications for a Locksmith to join its Maintenance Division. This position will have a stable schedule of working 4 consecutive 10 hour shifts. Because this position does work in the detention facilities, the selected individual will be working around persons in custody. Our facilities operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so applicants must be flexible and willing to work various shifts. The main duties of this role will be to install, repair and maintain locks, remote control devices, padlocks and elevator and emergency door/security locks. Knowledge of locksmithing, including electrical and security, systems sufficient to be able to plan, install and maintain locks is key in this role. This position will primarily reside at the Denver County Jail located on 10500 E Smith Rd, Denver, CO 80239. Successful candidates must complete and pass a background investigation that encompasses the applicant's employment and criminal history.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate
  • Three (3) years of experience in building operations, engineering and equipment and systems maintenance
  • A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements
  • This job requires driving.
  • Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application
  • Requires a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL "B") with appropriate endorsements by the end of probation
  • Requires either a valid journey certificate of qualification or equivalency as required in trades specialty issued by the City and County of Denver or a valid journey license issued by the State of Colorado by the end of probationary period.
  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, repair, and replace mechanical and electronic locking systems, including door hardware, cylinders, key systems, and access control devices.
  • Cut, issue, and manage keys; maintain master key systems and key records to ensure security and accountability.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues with locks, keys, safes, and security hardware; perform adjustments, rekeying, and system upgrades as needed.
  • Install and service electronic access control systems, keyless entry systems, card readers, and related security components.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and inspections of locks, doors, frames, and associated hardware to ensure proper function and security.
  • Respond to service requests and emergency lockouts; prioritize and resolve issues related to safety and security in a timely manner.
  • Assist with the installation, maintenance, and modification of doors, door hardware, and security systems in coordination with other trades personnel.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable safety standards, building codes, and security protocols.
  • Coordinate with external vendors and contractors for specialized locksmith and security system services.
  • Order and maintain inventory of locksmith supplies, including keys, cores, cylinders, and hardware; ensure proper stock levels and tracking.
  • Operate and maintain locksmith tools and equipment, including key cutting machines and specialized service tools.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation, including key control logs, work orders, and reports; estimate materials, labor, and costs for projects and repairs.
