About The Position

The Building Code Review Junior Structural Engineer will conduct interdisciplinary inspections throughout all phases of construction to verify compliance with codes and related regulations during construction. The role requires knowledge of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and its referenced standards, ASCE-7, and other related structural design standards, as well as structural aspects associated with the Virginia Statewide Fire Code for new construction, renovations, and repairs of various structures. The engineer will also conduct interdisciplinary reviews of plans and documents at a nationally recognized research university, evaluate proposed alternative designs, and make decisions that affect life safety. The work environment is complex and fast-paced, requiring professional expertise, attention to detail, and client assistance. Other related duties will be performed under the supervision of the University Building Official.

Requirements

  • Degree from an accredited college or university in Structural or Civil Engineering.
  • Ability to become a Licensed Professional Engineer as defined by the Code of Virginia.
  • Capability to acquire VA DHCD certification as a commercial building inspector within 18 months of employment.
  • Capability to acquire VA DHCD certification as a commercial building plans examiner and in one additional commercial trade inspector classification within 36 months of employment.
  • Working knowledge of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Codes and related standards.
  • Ability to resolve issues amicably and promote a team approach to problem solving.
  • Organizational skills to work in a fast-paced and multitasking environment.
  • Physical ability to perform site inspections, including bending, climbing, and lifting up to 50 lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in complex calculations and evaluations of structural systems.
  • VA DHCD Certified Building Official.
  • Advanced degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering.
  • Specialization in structural design.
