About The Position

Supports the teacher in the instruction and supervision of students by preparing materials, performing basic clerical tasks, and assisting students academically. This position requires continuous use of independent judgment. The essential functions as shown below represent only the key areas of responsibility; specific position requirements will vary depending on the needs of the department

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. Ability to relate to students.
  • Ability to carry out duties cooperatively with others.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • One of the following: (1) 48 credit hours post-secondary education, or (2) associate’s degree or higher, or (3) paraeducator certification from Board of Educational Examiners, or (4) combined score of 150 or higher on the COMPASS test (5) a passing score on the AccuPlacer test.

  • Supervisory experience with school age children.
  • Computer skills (depending on position).

Responsibilities

  • Perform clerical duties such as attendance reports, word processing, filing, and handling routine interruptions such as notes, messages and deliveries.
  • Perform supervisory duties, such as lunchroom, playground, halls and classroom.
  • Prepare and copies instructional materials.
  • Researches and assembles instructional materials.
  • Check papers, workbooks, homework and tests (if objective answers supplied by the teacher).
  • Assist in the care of the room.
  • Read to students, listens to students read.
  • Assist students with make-up work.
  • Assist in individual or group activities, games, flash cards, etc.
  • Assist students in interpreting and following directions of the teacher.
  • Drill to reinforce skills the teacher has taught.
  • Alert teacher to needs of students.
  • Assist teacher in checking progress of individualized study projects.
  • Fill out attendance cards and cumulative records.
  • Check emergency sheets and class lists for accuracy.
  • Collect monies for books, lab fees, etc. and provide receipts.
  • Assist with inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Contact community resource people.
  • Make educational games and aids.
  • Assist when emergencies arise.
  • Schedule class field trips; arranges transportation for trips.
  • Schedule before and after school busing for students.
  • Schedule parent/teacher conferences.
  • Assist with implementing building level initiatives, such as RIF.
  • Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationship with the public, students, and other employees.
  • Assist with other duties as may be assigned.
