The position involves performing semi-skilled work in various areas including grounds keeping, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and refrigeration and heating. The role requires a diverse set of skills to maintain and repair city-owned structures and facilities, ensuring a safe and pleasant environment for the public.

  • Mow or edge lawns using power mowers or edgers.
  • Maintain and adjust sprinkler systems and provide irrigation services.
  • Shovel snow from walks, driveways, or parking lots and spread salt in those areas.
  • Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, and trimming.
  • Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, and pruning saws.
  • Prune or trim trees, shrubs, or hedges using shears or chain saws.
  • Gather and remove litter.
  • Maintain or repair tools, equipment, or structures using hand or power tools.
  • Mix and spray or spread fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides.
  • Provide upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and other grounds features.
  • Clean or prepare sites to eliminate possible hazards.
  • Maintain restrooms, shelters, picnic tables, and other infrastructure.
  • Load or unload materials, machinery, or tools.
  • Inspect, clean, repair, and maintain equipment.
  • Prepare time and work reports.
  • Participate in the maintenance of athletic fields.
  • Perform rough carpentry tasks and remodel existing structures.
  • Repair, replace, install, and maintain electrical systems.
  • Perform plumbing maintenance and repairs.
  • Perform welding and metal fabricating tasks.
  • Prepare surfaces for painting and cover or remove graffiti.
  • Work with contractors and read blueprints.
  • Display courteous behavior to all persons and meet the needs of citizens.
  • Perform duties in a fair and impartial manner.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of skilled trades in maintenance/construction.
  • Understanding of electrical and refrigeration operations and equipment.
  • Familiarity with types of lumber, paint, concrete, and plumbing supplies.
  • Ability to operate vehicles and powered equipment.
  • Ability to interpret assignments from blueprints and sketches.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and persuasively.
  • Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school.
  • One to two years of related experience and/or training.
