About The Position

Performs a variety of bench operations using light hand tools for assembly and light power tools to make designated fits of parts and sub‑assemblies to ordinary tolerances.   For example, may file and scrape to remove burrs and prepare surfaces to accomplish required fit.   Perform any one of several operations to inspect, function fire, proof test, and target shoot all types of firearms of various gauges and calibers.

  • Job requires knowledge of and adherence to safety procedures for firearms and ammunition.   Job also requires knowledge of and adherence to hazardous waste handling procedures and policies for bullet trap maintenance and disposal of hazardous waste and filters.
  • May train or instruct others how to perform this job. May perform other related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Following specified assembly methods, assembles firearms by assembling a limited variety of components and subassemblies into an intermediate stage or final product. For example, will assemble barrel and receiver sets, trigger assemblies, and bolt assemblies into an action configuration. May later add stocks and other components to barreled actions to complete assembly of final product
  • Will wash parts, as required, prior to assembly to remove oils and other residue to facilitate proper assembly.
  • May drill mating parts to adjust and align parts to accomplish free working and proper clearances.
  • Making operating tests and final adjustments, visually inspects and gauge as required, using prescribed methods to maintain quality standards.
  • Following prescribed assembly repair guidelines, makes repairs to in‑process firearms rejected as a result of proof failures, function failures, and other quality rejections.
  • Function fires, makes visual inspection, aligns sights, gauges head space as required. Operates proof jack to fire proof loads. Fires to target firearms for grouping and accuracy requirements at both inside and outside ranges and change or adjust sights and scopes, including bore sighting, as required to ensure accuracy. Requires knowledgeable and proficient shooting skills and practices when targeting at distances up to several hundred yards.
  • Performs visual inspections on finished parts to determine if color standards are being maintained.
  • Gauges bore and rifling diameters for accuracy evaluation. Rechamber muzzles as required to improve accuracy and performs touch up of blued surfaces as required. 100% visual inspection on cartridge or shell cases to determine any defects.
  • Marks reject tag; stamps accepted work. Makes out inspection reports as required. Maintains inventory of ammunition due to storage and handling requirements, processes inventory transactions through materials departments.
  • Runs rod through barrel to ensure removal of cartridges before and after testing, disposes of empty shells on cartridge cases.
  • Maintains target and proof house bullet traps. Mixes and replenishes fluids as required, cleans lead particles, sludge, and gilded metal residues from traps and pump containers on a daily basis. Transfers residue to proper hazardous waste containers for disposal. Keeps trap area floors dry and clean. Replaces preliminary and H.E.P.A. type filters as required to insure air quality standards are maintained. Disposes of used filters properly.
