About The Position

The Broadcast Operations Engineer will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of broadcast technology and streaming support for Major League Baseball. Our Broadcast Operations team supports numerous video, voice communications, and IP monitoring systems at the Major and Minor League levels. This position will be full-time and primarily based in our New York City Operations Center. The candidate should have excellent communication skills, be well organized and possess a strong understanding of audio and video broadcast systems. They will have functional knowledge of IP networks and integrated multimedia control systems.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in the Broadcast industry, or related work experience
  • Experience working in a Broadcast Center / NOC environment using 'eyes-on-glass' multiviewers (e.g., TAG VS, Kaleido) and SRE Dashboards
  • Working knowledge of video backhaul and distribution methodology
  • Functional Knowledge of IP Video Transport encoding protocols like SRT, Zixi, RTMP, MpegTS, RTP, as well as an understanding of Pro-MPEG FEC and 2022-7 protection
  • Understanding of SCTE-104/35 ad insertion triggers functionality
  • Competence with Mac and Windows Operating Systems
  • Willingness to travel to assist remote teams on occasion
  • Experience with Evertz, Appear, Ross, Riedel, Haivision, Elemental or equivalent Broadcast hardware manufacturers
  • Understanding of networking topology, and OSI Model
  • Experience with video transport over WAN/LAN, and IP Packet analyzers
  • Experience with video encoding and assorted CODECs
  • Experience with Omnigraffle, Visio, or CAD
  • Programming or scripting experience

Responsibilities

  • Actively monitor broadcast and related systems to ensure smooth gameday operations
  • Act as point person to assist in efforts to maintain, repair, install, and expand broadcast and broadcast-related systems
  • Assist with supporting junior/seasonal members of the broadcast operations team
  • Work closely with the management team to develop and refine processes with remote and local teams for Major League Baseball (MLB) and Minor League Baseball (MiLB)
  • Proactively escalate issues and communicate effectively to other departments within MLB as well as club-specific contacts to expedite the resolutions of incidents
  • Act as Tier 1/Tier 2 support for game-day streaming operations for the MLB.tv and MiLB.TV products and support for broadcast related MLB hardware, software, and communications devices within MLB Ballparks and MLB data centers
  • Support the technology behind MLBs global video distribution system, as well as act as a liaison for those distribution partners when issues arise
  • Monitor and analyze real-time telemetry for Local Media, RSN, and National Broadcaster feeds, ensuring signal integrity for both OTT (MLB.tv) and Linear distribution (Partner Distribution), including SCTE-35 ad-insertion triggers and closed captioning compliance where present
  • Provide technical operations support to MLBs local Media team, Replay Operations, Broadcast Engineering, Player Tracking, and Ballpark Infrastructure teams
  • Manage IP transmission workflows utilizing Zixi, SRT, and RTP over WAN. Configure and troubleshoot encoders/decoders for low-latency delivery of content throughout MLBs large distribution network
  • Support other members of the operations staff to ensure proper documentation of incidents for nightly engineering reports
  • Drive Incident Management protocols during live events, including rapid triage, failover execution, as well as support discovery for post-mortem root cause analysis
  • Proactively monitor, analyze, and rectify technical faults in a variety of broadcast and broadcast related IP systems
  • Provide technical operations support of ballpark communications systems as problems are reported
  • Occasionally provide on-site assistance with remote ballpark teams for installation, decommission, and general upkeep of ballpark devices
  • Perform regular sweeps of facilities to identify issues and notify the system owners of faults found with their equipment
