About The Position

KMIZ-TV is accepting resumes for a paid broadcast/digital news internship in the ABC 17 newsroom. We offer real-world, hands-on experience with the goal of preparing candidates for full-time employment in our Columbia newsroom. The ABC 17 News internship is open to currently enrolled college/university juniors, seniors, and graduate students; recent college/university graduates are also eligible. Preference will be given to students who plan to live and work in the Mid-Missouri area or one of the other nine News-Press and Gazette broadcast markets: http://npgco.com [http://npgco.com] Eligibility requirements: Internship candidates must be currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, a program for Journalism, Broadcasting, English or a related field. Must be available to work up to 40 hours per week for a 12-week period between the months of June through August; days and hours will vary to coincide with college schedule and newsroom needs. Must possess excellent communication skills. Must be a voracious news consumer who is conversant in current events. Creative individuals with superior writing/communications skills are encouraged to apply. Duties may include assisting multimedia journalists, photographers, newscast producers, digital content producers and assignment editors. Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Assist producers with researching and writing/publishing assigned stories
  • Assist assignment editors with story research and daily beat calls
  • Assist digital producers with copy editing and attaching video &/or photo slideshows
  • Assist broadcast producers in the booth
  • Assist marketing producers in relaying story information from field crews
  • Attend daily editorial meetings and provide vetted story ideas
  • Developing Chyron maps and graphics to enhance the visual impact of local stories
  • Check spelling and grammar on broadcast and digital scripts
  • Enter headline and weather information on lower-third text-based crawl
  • Monitor scanners and social media feeds and relay information to producers, assignment editors &/or managers
  • Monitor station competitors and relay information to producers, assignment editors &/or managers
  • Attend post-newscast meetings and assist producers with discrepancy reports.
  • Meet all assigned production deadlines
  • Work overtime, irregular/odd hours, weekends and holidays as needed; be available to work breaking news stories as needed
  • Work as team with production staff, talent, clients and other departments on developing and completing production projects
  • Adhere to all guidelines, policies and procedures of the station, NPG, the FCC and all other federal, state and local laws
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by news management
