As a Broadband Technician II, you will perform intermediate to complex installations, disconnects and service changes for residential customers, including FTTH (Fiber to the Home RFoG and GPON). These services include, but are not limited to, video service, HSD Services, and home phone service. This role performs moderate troubleshooting from the tap to the customer's electronic devices (TV, DVD, Modem etc.). This role performs underground and/or aerial construction involved with system plant, along with its' repair and maintenance supporting various customer-focused activities. This position will be responsible for installing, splicing, repairing and maintaining aerial, buried, and/or underground fiber optic and coax cable. This position will need to be knowledgeable of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of telecommunications. Due to in-field support and on-call requirements, the individual selected for this position will be required to reside within a 60-minute driving distance from the Hobbs, NM warehouse located at: 2320 E Marland St, Hobbs, NM 88240. This position can be hired at either a Broadband Technician I or Broadband Technician II level depending on the skills and qualifications of the candidate.

Requirements

  • 1+ year basic technical telecommunications experience -OR- current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
  • 6+ months of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation and repair, or switch training.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must follow the TDS attendance guidelines in order to meet TDS's business needs including but not limited to our obligations to our customers and to our customers' needs.

  • Requires being available for on-call/standby responsibilities and may require occasional travel.
  • Must be willing to work overtime as needed.
  • Upon hire, must successfully pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum.
  • Ability to maintain DOT (Department of Transportation) requirements in relation to operating vehicles with a combined GVRW (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of >10,000 lbs.

  • Familiarity with company products and services.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Successful completion of the SCTE Broadband Premise Technician course.
  • SCTE Service Technician Certification to include Technical Foundation, Customer Service, Troubleshooting; or SCTE BDS Certification; or NCTI Installer Technician Course.
  • Successful completion of the SCTE Installer Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Performs intermediate and complex installation of all necessary cable wiring (interior and exterior) and hardware from the tap/MST to the customer's equipment for reception of cable and other company services that are offered for single, multi-family customers and/or commercial dwellings over both Fiber Optic and Coax delivery methods.
  • Responsible for inspection and correction of NESC safety violations for new construction builds and new service drops and legacy facilities.
  • Coordinates underground drop burial work with contractor and in-house underground burial crews, filling out, submitting and picking up permits from government agencies as required to perform work in the ROW.
  • Tracks and updates status within the systems.
  • Inspects ensuring that work performed meets all construction and government standards and pre-inspection verifies of serviceability of new customers in regards to finding the best, most efficient and cost effective routes to provide service.
  • Performs connects (new connects and reconnects), disconnects, upgrades, downgrades, relocates, install additional outlets, fiber connections, and hardline cutovers; installs or removes equipment (i.e. converters) at single or multiple unit dwellings.
  • Utilizes test equipment to identify and repair signal strength issues and ensure optimum reception both optical and RF.
  • Uses Locators, TDR's, FDR's and OTDR's while reading system maps.
  • Interprets system maps, calculates signal loss of cable lines and/or devices using signal level meters, reads and understands plant blueprints and updates to blueprints (excluding main trunk lines).
  • Climbs poles, ladders, towers or alternative structures along with the potential use of a bucket truck.
  • Performs all work as necessary to conform to quality control guidelines (includes compliance with requirements outlined in applicable regulations such as: OSHA, FCC, NEC and NESC).
  • Monitors and records system, drop, and in-house leakage; properly records all required information on work orders, surveys, referrals, etc.
  • Promotes cable, internet, and other company services; educates customer on proper use of the service, including how to add additional services, channel lineups, proper equipment usage, and other services that are available.
