Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Maine (or ability to obtain promptly)
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in bridge design, focused on municipal-scale projects
  • Proficiency in structural design and analysis software such as STAAD, RISA, or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of DOT design requirements and permitting processes
  • Familiarity with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to independently prepare and review design documents and technical reports

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with funding and permitting programs such as LOTCIP, STP, or the DOT Local Bridge Program
  • Familiarity with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software such as HEC-RAS
  • Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation for plan development
  • Knowledge of environmental permitting requirements for bridge projects in Maine
  • Participation in professional organizations such as ASCE or MESCE

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed structural design and analysis for bridge components, culverts, and retaining walls in accordance with AASHTO LRFD and DOT standards
  • Develop construction documents, including plans, details, specifications, and cost estimates, with a focus on clarity, accuracy, and constructability
  • Conduct site visits to collect field data, assess existing conditions, and support design development and constructability assessments
  • Prepare technical documentation and assist with local and state permitting efforts, including DOT and DEEP coordination
  • Collaborate with roadway, drainage, and environmental teams to ensure seamless integration of structural elements within broader project designs
  • Provide technical input during construction, including submittal reviews, field visits, and resolution of contractor questions
  • Participate in internal design reviews and quality control processes to ensure consistency with project goals and industry standards
  • Support the development of junior staff through informal mentoring and technical guidance
