This is an advanced level in-depth safety inspection position that serves as the Team Leader of a 2-person bridge inspection team conducting inspections on all types of structures in a specific geographical area of the state. Work is performed in an outside environment at considerable heights, with exposure to snakes, spiders, insects, and poisonous plants. Safety shoes will be required as a condition of employment. Location of work: Cleveland and surrounding counties, office based in Shelby, NC. This position is responsible for carrying out in-depth inspections on bridges, light standards, culverts, pipes, sign supports & overhead walkways and preparation of reports detailing conditions found during the inspection process. These reports are used in an evaluation process that determines the structural integrity and the capability of structures to support loads imposed on them by the traveling public and/or natural forces. Other duties include training new inspectors, scheduling and planning the team’s activities in conformance with bridge priorities. Work will primarily be in the county where the structures are located and surrounding counties with, upon special request, light travel to other counties in the state. The field work requires work in situations that are hazardous in their nature such as traffic congestion, working on slopes, climbing of high steel, working in confined areas, and working above water on scaffolds or the snooper crane at considerable heights. This position is responsible for all office duties including record keeping for payroll, progress reports, inventory control, and equipment maintenance. This position provides contact with other DOT Personnel, other State Agencies, researchers, etc. as necessary. Must have completed the NBIS Bridge Inspection Course

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressive experience in the inspection, construction, design or maintenance of major steel or concrete bridges or other structures; or High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and five (5) years of progressive experience in the inspection, construction, design or maintenance of major steel or concrete bridges or other structures; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.
  • Successful completion of FHWA approved comprehensive bridge inspection training and/or tunnel inspection training is required for above water Team Leaders.
  • Advanced SCUBA diving certification issued by a national diver certification association such as the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) or The Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), and 100 hours of verifiable underwater diving experience (e.g., log entries).
  • Must have completed the NBIS Bridge Inspection Course

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of NBIS Two Week Bridge Inspection Course (FWHA-NHI-130055)
  • Experience with Topside Bridge Inspection including Bridges, Pipes, Signs and Culverts
  • Experience with bridge inspection equipment, i.e. Hydra Platforms, Man Lifts, Snooper Trucks and Boats
  • Experience using Word and Excel
  • Experience in drafting, sketching and report writing
