About The Position

The Bridge Inspection Specialist position involves performing work directly related to the statewide bridge inspection program. This includes obtaining and reviewing bridge inspection data, conducting bridge inspections, and performing quality control reviews related to bridge inspection. The role also requires addressing necessary actions regarding Federal Inspection Metrics, preparing plans of action for scour assessments, and overseeing critical finding follow-up plans of action. The position requires the use of specialized bridge inspection equipment and involves contact with governmental officials. The work is overseen by a licensed professional engineer and may require travel. It can be physically demanding and potentially hazardous. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision, but unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Bridge Inspection Specialist I: No experience required.
  • Bridge Inspection Specialist II: 2 YEARS in either construction; construction/bridge/related structure inspection; bridge appraisal; diving/underwater inspection of structural elements.
  • Bridge Inspection Specialist III: 4 YEARS in either construction; construction/bridge/related structure inspection; bridge appraisal; diving/underwater inspection of structural elements, including 1.5 years of active participation in bridge inspection in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS).
  • Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with bridge inspections.
  • Coordinates communication between district/division/Department of Public Safety and other external entities.
  • Assists with reviewing and performing scour assessments, preparing needed plans of action, and status oversight of corrective action.
  • Prepares and analyzes summaries of bridge inspection computer data.
  • Coordinates inspection schedules, traffic control needs, and access issues directly with district personnel.
  • Prepares drawings and sketches to be included in bridge inspection reports.
  • Assists with reviewing and reporting critical findings, preparing follow-up plans of action, and status oversight of corrective actions.
  • Assists in engineering-related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities for plan development by others.
  • Works with design and construction personnel on new construction projects to determine new structures to be added to the inventory.
  • Records data and maintains and reviews bridge inspection files for compliance with bridge inspection manuals.
  • Researches plan sets for use in underwater, fracture-critical and on- and off-system bridge inspections.
  • Works with Federal Highway Administration representatives to ensure compliance with regulations for assigned projects.
  • Coordinates the bridge load-posting program.
  • Assists with fracture-critical bridge member inspection.
  • Tows boat trailer to inspection sites at various locations throughout the District.
  • Prepares and reviews correspondence.
  • Assists with quality control reviews related to bridge inspection activities and monitors needed corrective actions.
  • Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
