About The Position

Michael Baker International’s Construction Services staff supports clients by acting as their trusted on-site agent through all phases of construction, from pre-design to close-out, by providing qualified construction managers, inspectors, constructability reviewers, schedulers, estimators and safety experts. As new technologies evolve throughout the construction industry, innovative ideas are required to maintain and deliver successful construction projects. DESCRIPTION Michael Baker is seeking a qualified Bridge Coatings Inspector to support inspection and quality assurance activities on Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) bridge and transportation infrastructure projects. The inspector will be responsible for monitoring surface preparation and coating application to ensure compliance with project specifications, MDTA standards, and industry best practices. Project site is in Stevensville, MD

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience performing coatings inspection on bridge, highway, or heavy civil infrastructure projects
  • Experience working on DOT or transportation authority projects (MDTA experience strongly preferred)
  • Working knowledge of: Surface preparation standards (SSPC-SP, AMPP) Protective coating systems for steel bridges Coatings inspection instruments and testing methods

Responsibilities

  • Perform coatings inspection services on MDTA bridge projects, including surface preparation, environmental conditions, and coating application
  • Verify compliance with MDTA specifications, contract documents, manufacturer recommendations, and applicable industry standards (e.g., SSPC/AMPP)
  • Monitor and document surface preparation methods (abrasive blasting, power tool cleaning, etc.)
  • Measure and record ambient conditions (temperature, humidity, dew point)
  • Inspect coating materials, mixing, application, and curing
  • Measure and document dry film thickness (DFT), wet film thickness (WFT), and adhesion as required
  • Identify non-conforming work and communicate findings to project management and contractors
  • Prepare daily inspection reports, deficiency reports, and photographic documentation
  • Coordinate with MDTA representatives, engineers, contractors, and project teams
  • Maintain accurate records in accordance with MDTA documentation requirements
