About The Position

The Breeder Caretaker Program Manager manages volunteers that support the Canine Companions breeding program, through recruitment, education care and housing of Canine Companions breeder dogs as well as puppies prior to placement with puppy raisers. This includes overseeing the effectiveness of the breeder caretaker program and helping to ensure an adequate number of volunteers to support organizational goals for numbers of breeder dogs and puppies.

  • Ability to manager, network, and motivate staff, volunteers and clientele
  • Ability to work in a professional manner dealing with the public, staff and volunteers
  • Proficiency Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Experience with animal health, behavior and breeding, teaching, public speaking, and disability awareness and sensitivity.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 5 years’ prior management experience, preferably with volunteers
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent experience preferred
  • Prior experience in breeding and health management of canines is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Program Management: Review and approve breeder caretaker application, coordinate site visits and place breeder dogs with approved breeder caretakers. Provide orientation and follow-up to breeder caretakers to ensure volunteers have an adequate understanding of responsibilities required for housing a breeder for Canine Companions.
  • Whelp Scheduling: Work with the Director Canine Early Development Center Operations to create a schedule for puppy whelping and housing at the CEDC that maintains dog/puppy numbers that support organizational goals and work within facility capacity
  • Volunteer Management: Assist and oversee volunteer breeder caretakers and assist with recruitment efforts to ensure adequate numbers of breeder caretakers to meet annual goals and objectives.
  • Support and Education: Plan and oversee Breeder Caretaker educational seminars. Coordinate updates of Breeding Program Manual and other educational and socialization materials for breeder caretakers. Manage communications to breeder caretaker volunteers on CC online platform, Canine Community.
  • Administrative Duties: Coordinate, review, approve and submit reimbursement requests from breeder caretakers. Authorize approvals of breeding program expenses related to volunteer support. Take point on communications to breeder caretakers, working closely with the National Breeding Veterinarian. Follow-up on adherence to recommendations and treatment plans.
