About The Position

The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) provides compassionate, culturally sensitive support and encouragement to breastfeeding individuals and their families. This role is dedicated to promoting and supporting breastfeeding by sharing personal experiences, evidence-based information, and practical guidance. BFPCs operate within a defined scope of practice based on their training, education, and certification, and are responsible for delivering services in alignment with program goals and standard.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED); or six months related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three (3) years of experience in a related field.
  • Must hold a Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC) credential or an equivalent certification, such as Certified Breastfeeding Specialist (CBS) or Certified Breastfeeding Counselor (CBC).

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.
  • Must obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification within six (6) months of hire and maintain current certification throughout the duration of employment.
  • The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
  • May be required to meet and maintain pre-employment and periodic background investigation and adjudication for childcare.
