About The Position

The Breast Surgical Oncologist is responsible for providing comprehensive, patient-centered surgical care for individuals with benign and malignant breast diseases. This role includes diagnosing, staging, and surgically managing breast cancer and related conditions, participating in multidisciplinary tumor boards, collaborating closely with medical and radiation oncology, and contributing to quality, research, and programmatic growth of the breast cancer service line.

Requirements

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in General Surgery.
  • Fellowship training in Breast Surgical Oncology or Surgical Oncology with extensive breast experience (SSO-approved fellowship preferred).
  • Eligible for medical licensure in the state.
  • Demonstrated expertise in breast cancer surgery and current knowledge of evidence‑based treatment guidelines.
  • Expertise breast surgical oncology techniques.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Dedication to high-quality, compassionate patient care.
  • Interest in innovation, research, and quality improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert surgical management for breast cancer and other breast diseases, including lumpectomy, mastectomy, sentinel lymph node biopsy, axillary surgery, reconstruction coordination, and risk-reducing procedures.
  • Perform pre-operative evaluation, risk assessment, counseling, and follow-up care.
  • Collaborate in multidisciplinary patient management with radiology, pathology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, genetics, navigation, and supportive services.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary tumor board discussions and contribute to evidence‑based treatment planning.
  • Ensure adherence to national standards of breast cancer care, including NCCN, NAPBC, ASCO, and Commission on Cancer guidelines. Capacity to perform stereotactic and ultrasound biopsy.
  • Support the development and continuous improvement of the Breast Program and related oncology service lines.
  • Contribute to achieving and maintaining accreditation standards (e.g., NAPBC, CoC).
  • Participate in clinical quality initiatives, outcomes monitoring, and process improvement projects.
  • Engage in clinical research, clinical trials, retrospective studies, or quality-based research initiatives when applicable.
  • Provide education to residents, medical students, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, and other team members.
  • Participate in community outreach, prevention programs, survivorship initiatives, and educational events focused on breast health.
  • Work closely with administrative and medical leadership to develop strategic goals for breast surgical oncology services.
  • Participate in staff meetings, strategic planning, and operational initiatives within the oncology service line.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor to colleagues and staff.
