About The Position

Under the general direction of the Director of Central Operations, coordinates and evaluates all personnel, services, programs, and outreach for the Ruiz branch. Models excellent customer service both with patrons and coworkers, breaking down barriers and using, and empowering staff to use values based service. This is a full-time position with a starting salary of $63,026 plus excellent benefits.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to interact successfully with staff and public. Exhibits self-motivation with the ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and manage changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize work effectively; lead, direct, and coach personnel; and plan programs and services.
  • Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of professional library work as practiced in public libraries.
  • Thorough knowledge of current management practices.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven skills in planning, goal identification, and achievement of objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn operation of electronic circulation system and catalog.
  • Demonstrated advanced computer skills; competency in technology skills used in libraries.
  • Demonstrated ability to give and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work during all hours of branch operations should staffing need arise.
  • Staff performing Notary Services must meet the requirements listed in MO Notary Handbook.
  • Staff at this location must meet requirements of 22 CFR § 51.22 to act as a Passport Acceptance Agent.
  • Ability to speak and understand English is required. Additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages used in Jackson County, MO including Spanish, American Sign Language, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.
  • Three or more years of customer service experience in a patron facing environment.
  • At least two years of experience as a supervisor or manager.
  • Master's degree in Library / Information Science or equivalent combination of education, work, and related experience.

  • This location serves as a seed library with a focus on gardening and native plants. Gardening knowledge or experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, monitors, and evaluates goals and objectives for each branch; partners and cooperates with other departments and library locations to develop and implement effective services, programs, and procedures; assists subordinate staff in developing and organizing programs and procedures.
  • Directs personnel, including library volunteers, to assure productivity; interviews, selects, trains, schedules, coaches, and evaluates staff as appropriate; organizes, assigns, prioritizes, and reviews work; conveys and disseminates information to staff and staff concerns to management in a timely manner; successfully handles conflicts among staff.
  • Ensures proper staff coverage. This may include adjusting or augmenting own schedule if other staff cannot be found to provide coverage.
  • Directs and provides the delivery of high-quality library services including reference, information, reader's advisory, community referral, and services for teens and children to facilitate effective use of library resources; maintains a high level of competency in all desk procedures; maintains adequate staffing levels within budgetary limits; sets standards in accordance with library policy; provides consultation to staff.
  • Maintains communication and builds effective working relationships with the public and other library staff members; evaluates effectiveness of services offered; maintains strong partnerships with other library departments promoting collaboration, and effectively managing change through communication.
  • Conducts public outreach programs to increase awareness and support of library programs and services; develops relationships and partnerships with organizations in branch service area; participates in public speaking engagements and networking events.
  • Partners with Collection Development to maintain strong, up to date, vibrant collections; completes proper collection maintenance and communicates collection needs to appropriate staff.
  • Assists with formulation of library goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Prepares monthly report of activities and submits annual budget requests.
  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility in management of appropriate branch budgets.
  • Keeps abreast of current trends and developments in profession; performs duties requiring the exercise of professional skill, initiative, and independent judgement.
  • Performs other related work and undertakes special projects as assigned.
  • This branch receives United States Passport applications. Employees at this branch assists in processing applications and training new staff on the process. Staff must meet requirements of 22 CFR § 51.22 to act as a Passport Acceptance Agent.
