The position involves patrolling assigned buildings to deter and detect violations, maintaining order, enforcing state statutes and regulations, exercising arrest powers, and testifying in court. The officer will investigate disturbances and determine causes and participants. Administrative duties include the proper use of radio and telephones, accurately recording information, completing reports and documents, and disseminating information in a timely manner. A working knowledge of state statutes and policies of the South Carolina Department of Public Safety is required. The officer will provide physical security and protective services, eliminating safety hazards for all persons, including the Governor and Lieutenant Governor, and will man security checkpoints while designated buildings are open to the public. Establishing and maintaining a positive working relationship with co-workers, the general public, and other law enforcement agencies is essential.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be a resident of South Carolina and have a valid South Carolina driver's license prior to the effective date of hire.
  • Non-Certified Advanced Class III officers will be required to attend the Police Academy.
  • Candidates must meet 20/20 vision standards OR no more than 20/200 corrected to 20/100 or below.
  • Candidates must be capable of distinguishing, without corrections, three colors: green, yellow, and red.
  • A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required law enforcement experience.
  • Successful completion of advanced training covering operation of X-Ray and Magnetometer, suspicious package recognition and response procedures, and use of force review.
  • Starting salary for Non-Certified Basic Class III Limited Duty officers is $53,300.
