About The Position

The Great Basin Institute (GBI), in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), is recruiting a Botany Technician to assist with invasive plant management and botanical surveys in the Sierra Nevada region. The technicians will work alongside USFS staff to manage rare plants, control invasive plant species, and support the recovery of native vegetation in forested areas. This is a field-based position that will involve working outdoors in diverse and potentially challenging environmental conditions, including heat, cold, and insect exposure. The field season runs from April through Fall and focuses on the restoration of ecosystems impacted by wildfire as part of a multi-year effort to improve forest resilience and enhance biodiversity. Botany crews will assist with vegetation monitoring, data collection, botanical surveys, and invasive plant control methods, contributing to post-fire recovery and the broader goal of increasing forest health. These efforts are vital to protecting forest resources and reducing the threat of future wildfires.

Requirements

  • Experience conducting botanical field surveys, including rare plant surveys, under established project guidance
  • Familiarity with standard field methods for botanical surveys, vegetation assessments, and habitat characterization
  • Ability to identify plants using technical keys to the species or subspecies level, with support as needed
  • Ability to accurately implement established data collection, inventory, assessment, and monitoring protocols
  • Skills in GPS navigation and map reading
  • Physical ability for fieldwork in remote areas, including overnight camping if necessary
  • Ability to follow field instructions, work safely, and contribute effectively to team-based field projects
  • Effective communication skills for coordination with multidisciplinary teams
  • Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with the ability to safely operate and maintain a 4WD vehicle on and off paved roads
  • Coursework Biology, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, Botany, Forestry or a related field OR one season of botany/forestry/natural resource management fieldwork experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting botanical surveys to determine species identity, population characteristics, environmental conditions, factors affecting vigor, and the extent of species and their habitats.
  • Photographing or collecting specimens as directed.
  • Producing maps of survey areas.
  • Recording, entering, and summarizing data.
  • Using botanical keys to identify plants.
  • Supervise contractors work for the USFS
  • Assisting with reporting tasks as needed.

  • Technician Wage: $21/hour with overtime at 1.5x hourly rate.
