The City of Steamboat Springs Yampa River Botanic Park Division in the Parks & Recreation Department is pleased to announce we are hiring a Facilities Team Lead. We are a small, friendly team that works to beautify one of the only botanical gardens in Northwest Colorado welcoming thousands of visitors throughout the summer. A place of community, this riverside botanical garden is a very rewarding place to work where visitors will stop and thank you for the work you do. All of this combined with our flexible schedule makes it one of the best places to work in Steamboat. GENERAL PURPOSE The Facilities Team Member performs the daily tasks and responsibilities of a public garden facilities technician. Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of the Botanic Park’s facilities and systems. The position runs from approximately late April through the end of October. The position is expected to work 40 hours per week with occasional evenings and weekends. While consistency is important, the schedule can be flexible to adapt to employee’s needs.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school education or GED equivalent
  • Two (2) years of experience relating to landscape construction, maintenance, or repair, irrigation systems, or
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong knowledge of irrigation systems and repair.
  • Strong knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to adapt, take initiative, work independently, and complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work safely
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, other departments and the public
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as an ambassador of the City of Steamboat Springs and upholds City values of Service, Teamwork, Integrity, Well-being, Respect and Compassion, while always espousing safety.
  • Builds and maintains the infrastructure that supports the gardens and meets the needs of visitors including but not limited to hardscape, trails, stairs, walkways, gates, and signage.
  • Maintains the irrigation system including programming and repairs.
  • Works with the Lead Horticulturist to monitor the system and adjusts throughout the growing season.
  • Utilizes Baseline to analyze data and adjust the system accordingly.
  • Manages the water right/irrigation ditch from Fish Creek and the head gate through the Botanic Park.
  • Ensures the maintenance of the Trillium House including the annual maintenance review and implementation of necessary tasks.
  • With the horticulture staff, ensures the restrooms are cleaned daily, and kitchen and Emerald Room are cleaned weekly and before functions.
  • Coordinates, schedules, and serves as the primary contact for contractors including but not limited to irrigation consultants, art conservators, painters, appliance repairs, mosquito control, concrete maintenance, and other skilled professionals.
  • Oversees all turfgrass maintenance with the Groundskeeper.
  • Serves as the liaison with the Parks and Recreation Department staff to coordinate irrigation turn on and blow out, irrigation repair as needed, turfgrass maintenance including aeration and dethatching, and equipment maintenance.
  • Serves as the liaison with other City departments including Facilities to coordinate maintenance work as necessary.
  • Is responsible for large equipment including but not limited to the tractor, two golf carts, and the tonka machine.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
  • Supports the horticulture staff as needed.
  • Assists with Botanic Park special events as needed.
  • Interacts with visitors and answers visitor’s questions about the Botanic Park.
