The Boring Mill Operator is responsible for setting up and operating a manual boring mill based on blueprints, sketches, and oral or written instructions. The position requires a focus on quality and efficiency, ensuring that work is completed accurately and meets customer expectations. The operator will set feeds, speeds, cut depth, and select tools while making allowances for metal characteristics, temperature effects, and shrinkage. In-process inspections will be performed using various measuring tools and indicators. The role may also involve improvising holding fixtures and requires the use of hand and power-operated machine handling equipment. The operator is expected to maintain a clean work area, practice safety at all times, and follow safety policies and procedures. Continuous improvement suggestions are encouraged, and the operator should demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude towards professional development.

  • Set up and operate machine for boring, turning, and facing castings, forgings, jigs, fixtures, etc.
  • Improvise holding fixtures when standard fixtures do not serve.
  • Set feeds, speeds, cut depth, and select tools.
  • Make allowances for metal characteristics, temperature effect, and shrinkage.
  • Perform in-process inspection using a variety of measuring tools and indicators.
  • Use hand and power-operated machine handling equipment as required.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and work instructions accurately.
  • Provide instruction and guidance to employees assigned to assist.
  • Participate in training of welders and other employees of lesser classification.
  • Maintain a clean work area and practice safety at all times.
  • Identify, recommend, and implement continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Demonstrate initiative and enthusiasm for the job.
  • High school GED required.
  • Trade school/BOCES in Machining Fundamentals.
  • BOCES training or its equivalent in progressive Machine Shop assignments.
  • Willingness to work overtime as required.
  • Minimal travel may be required.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team-oriented culture.
  • Strong training skills.
  • Competitive hourly wage ranging from $21.60 to $30.00 per hour.
