About The Position

The position involves working from general instructions, operation sheets, standard practices, complicated drawings, and specifications to plan, layout, set up, and perform various machining operations. These include straight and multiple step blind hole or through boring, compound angle boring, milling, facing, spot facing, tapping, grinding, and other standard boring machine operations to very close tolerances and fine finish. The role requires the use of standard attachments and holding devices, as well as methods to hold and align work consistent with required squareness, parallelism, angularity, and rigidity of the workpiece. The operator will maintain several closely interrelated dimensions and perform precision electro limit or end gage set-ups to locate the workpiece accurately. Responsibilities also include sharpening cutting tools, selecting feeds and speeds based on material and finish requirements, planning methods and sequences of operations, and performing quality checks to ensure standards are maintained. The operator will also perform repair and salvage operations, diagnose machining difficulties, and comply with all EH&S procedures.

Requirements

  • H.S Diploma or equivalent.
  • Well-rounded knowledge of boring machine operations, tools, and layout practices.
  • Ability to work from complicated drawings, sketches, or operation sheets.
  • Use shop mathematics and precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, vernier scales, and calipers.
  • Equivalent to 2 years high school plus 2 to 3 years trades training.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of decimals and fractions.
  • Ability to interpret ordinary or less complicated drawings.
  • Knowledge of grinding methods and procedures, types of grinding wheels, and their relationship to metals.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, layout, set up and perform various machining operations to close tolerances.
  • Use and adapt standard attachments and holding devices.
  • Hold and align work consistent with required squareness, parallelism, angularity, and rigidity.
  • Work from established reference lines and points to locate centers and lay out work accurately.
  • Maintain several closely interrelated dimensions involving internal measuring in confined areas.
  • Perform precision electro limit or end gage set-ups.
  • Sharpen cutting tools as required.
  • Select feeds and speeds according to material and finish requirements.
  • Plan methods and sequence of operations to anticipate difficulties.
  • Refer unusual conditions to Working Leader or Supervision.
  • Perform repair and salvage operations and diagnose machining difficulties.
  • Check work to assure quality standards are maintained.
  • Perform related work including deburring, polishing, and part marking.
  • Complete operator checklist and comply with EH&S procedures.
  • Segregate waste material and follow good housekeeping practices.
