About The Position

The Bonder position involves applying basic and some advanced technical skills and knowledge to fabricate, rework, and repair metallic or nonmetallic bonded parts for operational aircraft applications. The role requires performing detailed work operations in this area of specialization.

Requirements

  • No formal education required; a combination of experience and training may be substituted for the education requirement.
  • 2-4 years of experience in metallic and non-metallic bonding.
  • Ability to read and interpret work instructions and properly document work performed on various documents.
  • Proficient in using close tolerance measuring tools such as scales, micrometers, calipers, and depth gauges.

Responsibilities

  • Perform bonding of metallic or nonmetallic materials to fabricate parts for aircraft applications using varied but generally not complex products and processes.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, manuals, specifications, sketches, job orders, planning documents, and engineering drawings.
  • Determine equipment requirements and the method and sequences of operation to be followed in fabrication of parts using materials such as graphite, fiberglass, plastic, boron, flock, mat, epoxy resins, rubber, and similar materials.
  • Plan, lay out, fabricate, and build adhesive bonded assemblies of metallic and nonmetallic composite materials.
  • Fabricate composite and metal parts into subassemblies for prefitting in preparation for bonding/curing in presses, ovens, and autoclaves.
  • Lay out, prefits, assemble, and perform lay-up on a variety of metal to metal and composite bonded assemblies.
  • Fit core in panels where close tolerances are required for installation of details for completion of assembly.
  • Perform vacuum bagging for autoclave cures up to 100 psi.
  • Lay out and mark dimensions and reference lines on material to develop and trace patterns of product or parts, or use templates.
  • Select tooling and materials compatible with the processing techniques identified in the work instructions.
  • Perform other duties as required, which may include assignments in job classifications and departments other than the primary assignment.
