The Boilermaker position at Montana State Prison involves performing welding duties and maintaining equipment within the Maintenance Services Department. The role focuses on providing quality welding and metal work services, supervising an inmate workforce, and ensuring safety and compliance with institutional policies.

  • Perform major and minor welding duties to meet the requirements of the Institution.
  • Maintain the welding shop to meet the welding needs at Montana State Prison.
  • Plan all work assigned to offer the best possible welding services.
  • Maintain and repair equipment, systems, and components for scheduled and emergency requirements.
  • Operate and maintain all necessary equipment using safe operating techniques.
  • Provide quality welding and metal work maintenance and construction services to various areas of the institution.
  • Supervise and train an inmate workforce in the boilermaker trade.
  • Select, evaluate, and discipline the inmate workforce as required.
  • Work on boilers and heat exchangers with licensed plumbers as needed.
  • Perform damage control responsibilities and report damages to the Maintenance Management Team.
  • Adhere to security duties to maintain an adequate level of security.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5 years of progressively responsible experience within the boilermaker trade is required.
  • Welding certification in pipe/plate or ability to obtain within 1 year.
  • Montana State LI 3rd class boiler license or ability to obtain within 1 year.
  • Successful completion of an approved apprenticeship program is desired.
  • Employment may qualify for student loan forgiveness under PSLF.
