Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent with valid Boiler Operator License (Grade/Class as required by local jurisdiction)
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience operating commercial or industrial boiler systems with demonstrated knowledge of safety protocols
  • Current certifications in relevant safety training programs and OSHA compliance standards
  • Strong understanding of steam systems, combustion processes, heat transfer principles, and water treatment chemistry
  • Solid plumbing and mechanical aptitude with experience troubleshooting piping systems, valves, and mechanical equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, equipment manuals, and instrumentation displays
  • Physical capability to work in hot, noisy environments while lifting up to 50 pounds and working in confined spaces
  • Proficiency with hand tools, measuring instruments, and basic computer skills for logging and reporting
  • Good vision and hearing to effectively monitor equipment status and respond to alarms
  • Flexibility to work shift schedules including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call availability for emergencies

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with multiple fuel types including natural gas, oil, and biomass systems
  • Knowledge of building automation systems, energy management platforms, and computerized control systems
  • Previous experience in healthcare, manufacturing, educational, or other institutional facilities
  • Additional trade certifications in mechanical, electrical, or HVAC systems
  • Experience working with water treatment specialists and chemical treatment optimization programs
  • Familiarity with environmental compliance reporting and energy efficiency best practices

Responsibilities

  • Monitor boiler operations including pressure, temperature, water levels, and fuel consumption to ensure safe and efficient performance throughout your shift
  • Start up and shut down boilers following established procedures and safety protocols while maintaining clear documentation of all activities
  • Adjust controls and settings to maintain optimal operating conditions and respond quickly to changing facility demands
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks including cleaning, lubricating, and replacing components as scheduled or when issues arise
  • Conduct regular inspections of boilers, pumps, valves, gauges, and safety devices to identify potential problems before they impact operations
  • Monitor and maintain proper water chemistry including pH levels, dissolved oxygen, and chemical treatment programs
  • Test safety systems including pressure relief valves, low water cutoffs, and emergency shutdown systems to ensure compliance with regulations
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations, equipment alarms, and after-hours service calls as needed
  • Document all maintenance activities, equipment readings, and water quality tests in operational logs and computerized systems
