About The Position

The Utility Technician position at U. S. Steel is an entry-level role that plays a vital part in the operations of one of the world's largest steel producers. This position involves operating equipment and performing various tasks that support production and service units in a heavy industrial environment. The role requires the technician to engage in general labor duties, operate mobile equipment, and assist in the maintenance of plant equipment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to work rotating 8-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed.
  • Adherence to safety procedures and guidelines at all times.
  • Punctuality, consistent attendance, and self-direction are essential for operational success.
  • Must pass a pre-employment general aptitude test.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating high pressure natural boiler.
  • Experience with GE Frame 6B combustion turbine.
  • Experience with GE back pressure extraction steam turbine (19MW).
  • Experience operating high purity water demineralizer systems (2 trains, cation, anion, cation polisher).
  • Experience operating softened water system (4 softeners, cation).
  • Experience with multi-media filter system (4 filters).
  • General knowledge of Ovation DCS.
  • General knowledge of Mark V turbine control system.
  • Theoretical understanding of 138kV transmission systems and electrical switch-gear systems.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as both a Control Room Operator and Outside Operator as needed.
  • Assist with the start-up, operation, and shutdown of all equipment, including turbine/generators, boilers, pumps, fans, and other plant systems.
  • Ensure safe and efficient operation of all equipment, including combustion turbine, Once Through Steam Generator, steam turbine, generators, and plant auxiliaries.
  • Complete daily logbook documentation and other plant recordkeeping requirements accurately and timely.
  • Conduct periodic log and record reviews to ensure effective functioning of lockout/tag out procedures and equipment status.
  • Participate in the administrative maintenance of plant operating manuals, technical references, and preventive/predictive maintenance records.
  • Proactively monitor all plant equipment and systems and be proficient in their operation.
  • Work in various areas of the mill, adapting to environmental conditions that can be hot, cold, dirty, greasy, wet, and noisy.
