About The Position

This role will be located at one of Discovery Land Company’s locations: Homewood Mountain Resort, set on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe in Homewood, California. Homewood is seeking a Boat Captain to join the Outdoor Pursuits Department. This role is a key part of the Outdoor Pursuits team and contributes directly to the Homewood Club Experience—blending world-class hospitality with expert watercraft operation and recreation leadership. The Boat Captain is responsible for operating club vessels, facilitating on-water activities, and creating a welcoming, engaging, and safety-first environment. This position works collaboratively across departments and supports broader Club Operations as needed.

Requirements

  • Current USCG OUPV / Captain’s License required
  • Strong experience operating boats and leading water-based recreation programs
  • Proficiency in wake sports (surfing, boarding, tubing required; foiling preferred)
  • Deep understanding of boating safety, navigation, and California waterway regulations
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and decisive in dynamic environments
  • Strong swimming ability and readiness to support emergency situations
  • Professional demeanor with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be able to work flexible work hours/schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Long hours may be required due to business demands.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English; additional languages preferred.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position including, but not limited to, working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, standing, walking, and moving for periods of greater than eight (8) hours, and lifting and carrying items sometimes greater than seventy-five (75) pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a highly personalized, anticipatory level of service on and off the water
  • Create a welcoming, fun, and engaging environment for members and guests
  • Take ownership of each experience from arrival through departure
  • Build relationships with members through authentic interaction and consistency
  • Curate “once-in-a-lifetime” lake experiences aligned with the Homewood brand
  • Maintain a professional presence, positive attitude, and strong attention to detail
  • Safely operate all Homewood Club vessels in accordance with USCG and California regulations
  • Conduct daily vessel inspections to ensure safety, performance, and cleanliness
  • Maintain full awareness of lake conditions, weather, and navigational considerations
  • Execute all safety protocols, including waivers, briefings, and emergency response readiness
  • Maintain logs for vessel usage, fueling, and maintenance
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with local agencies and lake authorities
  • Lead and facilitate a variety of water-based activities, including: Wake surfing Wake foiling Paddle sports (as needed)
  • Provide coaching, instruction, and encouragement for all skill levels
  • Create a fun, energetic, and inclusive on-water environment
  • Ensure proper use of all equipment and reinforce safety standards
  • Support setup, transitions, and flow of daily lake club programming
  • Ensure all boats and equipment are clean, organized, fueled/charged, and guest-ready
  • Assist with docking, launching, securing, and transporting vessels
  • Support fueling operations for both club and guest vessels
  • Monitor equipment condition and report maintenance needs proactively
  • Uphold the highest standards of care for all club assets
  • Work closely with Outdoor Pursuits leadership to enhance programming and experiences
  • Support Club operations across departments as needed (events, activations, logistics)
  • Contribute to a strong team culture built on respect, communication, and accountability
  • Assist in training and mentoring team members where appropriate
  • Maintain flexibility to support evolving operational needs
