How You’ll Make An Impact   Board Operators are responsible for the presentation of all audio broadcast/streamed by KCRW during live shifts.  Board ops set up and operate in-studio equipment, prepare audio and other materials in order to mix all sound elements in real time for programs and breaks scheduled in the daily program log. Board Operators report to the KCRW Radio Station Operations Manager. Responsibilities include working in KCRW’s radio studios, often in fast-paced situations that require meeting multiple deadlines of different kinds.  Board Op shifts can require staff to work alone or with other station personnel such as hosts, producers and content managers.  Board ops are responsible for broadcasting and mixing KCRW’s programs, newscasts, breaks and spots on time according to KCRW’s schedule and standards.

Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year related work experience required
  • Varied audio editing and/or production experience

Responsibilities

  • Operate live on-air audio boards and all studio equipment as required
  • Follow and maintain the daily program log to ensure correct and timely airing of shows, elements, breaks and spots during airshifts
  • Follow in-studio SOPs during live shifts to ensure optimal outcomes in case of technical difficulties, including use of back-up sources and contingency plans
  • Perform all EAS responsibilities as required
  • Fulfill station’s FCC obligations, including using time-based delay equipment (“Dump” button)  to prevent to prevent obscenities from airing
  • Monitor news sources and follow station’s breaking news procedures 
  • Follow programming directions of direct supervisor and content managers
  • Coordinate with shift hosts and producers regarding audio elements for live newscasts, breaks, etc. during air shift as needed
  • Maintain proper levels, mix, timing and quality of all audio that is broadcast
  • Reliably and seamlessly hit posts 
  • Write and edit live air copy and continuity as required
  • Contribute to and/or edit content providing station information sources, including the “Day Sheet” as required 
  • Provide content (weather, traffic, promotional info, etc) to local hosts as required
  • Perform live voicework as required in keeping with station sound and directives
  • Use in-studio Digital Audio Workspaces (Dalet OneCut, ProTools, etc.) to record, edit, mix and save audio for later broadcast
  • Complete daily audio spot production duties as assigned
  • Prepare syndicated programs for broadcast as directed
  • Engage and use remote connections (Comrex, ReportIt, Phones, etc) as needed
  • Complete daily audio production duties as assigned
  • Coordinate with any hosts and producers regarding audio elements for live newscasts and breaks during air shift
  • Coordinate with production department regarding locally produced recorded programming
  • Coordinate with technical directors of live programs
  • Coordinate with engineering department regarding proper function of station equipment
  • Coordinate with promotions department regarding on-air promotional priorities 
  • Coordinate with traffic department regarding underwriting and PSA issues
  • Perform other duties as assigned
