About The Position

A Board/Commission Member serves the community by providing informed oversight, guidance, and decision-making on matters within the board/commission’s legal authority. Members review materials, attend meetings, ask thoughtful questions, uphold ethical standards, and work collaboratively to support transparent, fair, and effective public service.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Community, public service, leadership, or relevant professional experience preferred but not required.
  • Willingness to learn applicable laws, policies, procedures, and board/commission subject matter.
  • Additional eligibility requirements may apply by statute or ordinance (e.g., residency, political affiliation, licensure, or subject-matter expertise).
  • Demonstrated interest in community service and civic participation.
  • Ability to participate effectively in public meetings and communicate respectfully with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate and consider differing viewpoints.
  • Ability to understand written materials and ask relevant questions
  • Ability to attend meetings and remain seated for extended periods; occasionally stand, walk, and move within meeting spaces.
  • Ability to read and interpret agendas, staff reports, applications, plans, and related documents in printed or digital format.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written), ask questions, and engage in respectful discussion in a public forum.
  • Ability to think critically, evaluate information, and make decisions consistent with applicable laws and policies.
  • Ability to use basic office and communication tools, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and participate in scheduled meetings, hearings, workshops, and required training.
  • Review agenda materials in advance and come prepared to discuss, deliberate, and vote when applicable.
  • Evaluate information and recommendations from staff, applicants, community members, and subject-matter experts and exercise independent judgment in the public interest and within the board/commission’s authority.
  • Comply with applicable laws, ordinances, and City policies, including public meeting requirements, confidentiality where applicable, and records retention.
  • Maintain professionalism and respect in public discussion, even during disagreement.
  • Disclose actual or potential conflicts of interest and follow recusal requirements when appropriate.
  • Represent the community responsibly by considering public input and community-wide impacts.
  • Support long-range goals and continuous improvement within the board/commission’s scope.
  • Serve on subcommittees as appointed.
  • Attend occasional trainings, work sessions, site visits, or special meetings as needed.
  • Represent the board/commission at community meetings or events when requested/authorized.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in compliance with law and City policy.
